    Summary

    Chapter 1: What is PCOS?

PCOS is also known as polycystic ovarian syndrome. It is the most common endocrine disorder of females. The rate of being diagnosed with this disorder is between 5-10 percent. It is a disorder in which there are an abnormal number of hormones in the body. It affects the entire body to some degree. Its origins are unclear but it is believed to be related to insulin resistance or what is sometimes called insulin insensitivity syndrome.

    • Hyper hair growth on the face and body

    • Thinning scalp hair

    • Many unruptured follicles on the ovaries, misdiagnosed as cysts

In fact, about 40 percent of women who have PCOS are of normal to low weight.

There is no cure for PCOS. We will later discuss available treatments. Diet, exercise and medicines in many cases can help eliminate some of the symptoms. If it is not well treated, it can lead to certain forms of cancer and diabetes. With dietary management, symptoms can be close to completely resolved.

PCOS used to be called Stein-Leventhal syndrome. It was named after two American gynecological specialists, Irving F Stein and
