How to Make Your School Cheer Team - Kelvin Alston
Letterman
Chapter 1: Introduction:
Cheerleading is an amazing activity that males and females can participate in from elementary school through college. My path to becoming a cheerleader started with becoming a competitive gymnast during the 4th and 5th grade. Then I played football, basketball, and ran track through junior high and high school. Since I have always been small, I knew that I would not receive a scholarship in those sports, so I decided to look for other avenues.
One of the members of my church had been cheering for a couple of years and invited me to one of their practices. Since I was a former gymnast and loved to tumble, I was open to watching a practice. After my first visit to the cheer gym, I fell in love with the sport of cheerleading. I finally found a great sport where I could use my athletic ability and tumbling skills.
After cheering in high school for two years, I received multiple scholarship opportunities and was scouted by numerous college coaches. I decided to go to the University of Texas at Austin where I cheered for 4 years and led the team as a captain for 2 years.
Cheering in college gave me the opportunity to be a part of the Athletic Department of a Division 1-A University, which meant our team was able to travel all across the country to cheer on the sidelines for college football and basketball games. I received a first rate education, a partial scholarship, top training from the university strength coaches, and was involved with our school’s students and alumni. We were fortunate enough to qualify to compete at the UCA College Nationals 2 years in a row. We represented the University of Texas while competing against other cheer teams from all across the nation. The best part of cheering in college was the amazing friendships I made with the others on my team, which I will cherish and hold onto for the rest of my
