    CHAPTER ONE

    WHAT EXACTLY IS THE KETO DIET?

    A ketogenic or keto diet is a low carb diet, full and rich in fat, with moderate protein intake. The diet is aimed at helping you burn fat adequately. The keto diet is like other low carb diets you can find. It helps you to lose weight, improve performance, and prevent or minimize some health issues. The keto diet has enjoyed multiple scientific studies, and this has earned its place with many medical professionals.

    The keto diet involves you reducing your intake of carbohydrates, that you will replace with healthy fats, and a moderate level of protein. By reducing carb intake, your body will enter a state of ketosis, which involves the breakdown of fat from a person’s body to gain energy. The ketogenic diet has proven to help deal with certain health issues including cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and epilepsy. The diet often leads to a reduction in blood sugar and insulin levels. When this happens, the body begins telling the liver to produce ketones, meaning it enters a state of ketosis. Once in ketosis, a person can begin to enjoy all the benefits of living a low-carb life.

    KETOSIS AND HOW IT CAN BE OF BENEFIT TO MEN

    A person is said to be in a state of ketosis when s/he depends on the breakdown of fat in place of carbohydrates in the body as fuel for energy. This often occurs when a person’s body doesn’t have enough glucose to produce energy. In such a situation, the body needs an alternative, and thus turns to fat. The fat that is stored in the body will be broken down to create energy from which ketones (an acid) will be produced.

    Generally, the body’s cells make use of glucose gained from carbohydrates as their fundamental source of energy. When you eat sugar such as milk and fruits, or other foods filled with starch such as pasta and bread, you will have enough carbohydrates to extract glucose. Once your body breaks down the carbs, it becomes glucose that serves as a fuel for your body, and it can be stored in a person’s liver and muscles in form of glycogen.
