Chapter 1: A Brief Overview of the Problem
Obesity and other related health disorders have become mainstream. America has a high rate of preventable deaths costing nearly 900,000 lives every year. A large number of these deaths are caused by obesity and related diseases. Out of these 20-40% lives can be saved if the weight is kept under control and other health measures are taken. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report tells that at present 39.8% of US adult population faces obesity. Two out of three adult males are either obese or dangerously overweight and the percentage for women is even higher.
The scary part of the equation is that although obesity in itself is a big problem, it also brings with it a plethora of problems. Obesity-related conditions like heart diseases, hypertension, cholesterol, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and several types of cancers are leading causes of preventable deaths. The bad news doesn't end here, sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, low quality of life, anxiety & depression, body pain and low self-esteem are also direct consequences of obesity. But, we are all aware of this.
Lack of knowledge is not the problem these days, the internet has made that easy for everyone. The absence of actionable measures is the real problem of the modern world.
These are desperate times and 'desperate times call for desperate measures.' One day you realize that your weight is getting out of control and you are not even fitting in the clothes you recently bought. It could also be that the pictures posted by your friends, colleagues or relatives intrigued you. A body-shaming incident can also propel this reaction. Looking at the increasing percentage of the population getting added to the overweight category year after year, the results don't look very promising. So, this should make it clear to you that if you are going to lose weight, then the real push has to come from you. Weight loss industry can help you in your endeavors by providing you the right gear, environment or supplements, but if you are relying completely on them for your weight loss, then the magic potion is yet to be invented.
The real problem lies within us. The general understanding of weight loss and dieting is flawed. Losing and maintaining weight isn't a short-term measure. On the contrary, it is a long-term activity that needs to be carried out with patience and perseverance. Weight loss diets and exercises are important parts of it and have their definite roles. However, you can't achieve the desired results by overstressing on one part and neglecting the other. Excess of anything is bad for us, and that should be the motto of every weight loss program.
Lifestyle change is the key to effective management of weight. A short and sudden burst of exercise, dieting, absenteeism from sugars and carbs isn’t going to work, and we all know this. Such actions are only good for boasting or generating a feel-good factor. If we do not become aware of the demon called increasing weight in time and start taking it seriously now, it'll be very late once the real trouble called 'OBESITY' kicks in life. Obesity can cripple life in many ways and cause hindrances in the way of effective weight loss measures.
