Unknowingly many people put limits on what I could become and how far I could go. Thankfully one person in my life always said I could be whatever I decided. Thank you to my late grandfather, Joseph N. Morgan, Sr.

Thank you for always believing in me.

Thank you for acknowledging my wings and encouraging me to use them.

Thank you to my cousin Shatara for always accepting me for me. Thank you for always being my safe haven in the midst of storms. Thank you for being the friend I always needed. Many storms have been less bitter because of you. Your fearlessness has inspired me in many ways.

Nowadays, young girls are told they can be anything they want when they grow up, but the unique challenges that women face in the society have never been more publicly and properly scrutinized. Today I am a successful author, entrepreneur, wife and bonus mom. I have been blessed multiple times over, but my story is one that has been riddled with plenty of trials and tribulations that many might even consider as markers of a failed life. At the age of 50, I have faced the challenges of life head-on, even when they have often caught me off-guard. I really value these challenges as important lessons that have ultimately shaped me into the woman that I am today. I can stand proudly today and say that I have chosen the narrative that I desire for my life. My ambitions have led me to want to share my story with as many women as possible in order to inspire and help others navigate through this exceedingly confusing, and at times, punishing journey that we call life. My story is complicated, intricate, and devastating, much like your own might be. But if my story can enlighten something within your own life and make a change for the better, regardless of how big or small that change may be, that to me is a huge feat and an incredible success in itself.

Women all around the world are constantly subjected to a certain line of questioning, a tale that is as old as time and one that has continuously fostered a system of gender inequality. Women have heard it all before as we are constantly doubted, questioned, second-guessed and underestimated. We are forced to choose between having a family or having a career. We are reduced to mere stereotypes that completely rid us of our potentials. Societal pressures force us to make amends with the fact that getting older means slowing down. We are confronted with the will of these limitations that haunt us as we journey through our lives.

The truth is that I was also once a staunch believer in these limitations, as well as an agent of it, projecting these so-called ideals onto other women around me. But you can’t blame me either. I lived and breathed only this one notion of what the society thinks a woman was supposed to be. Seeing the light at the end of the tunnel and the bigger picture was incredibly difficult, and it took years and years of challenges and hardship to really open my eyes to a new truth. The idea of resisting such expectations took shape through the experiences that I had, which
