Cora has just graduated from the Academy and received her first assignment on a science vessel when she is suddenly reassigned to report to the Eden Colony in a newly discovered sector.

Chapter 1

Cora

It was my first assignment off planet. I had just graduated from the Academy with a degree in Astrobotany and because it wasn’t quite as sexy as some of the other majors, I was in demand. Assigned to a science vessel surveying the newly discovered Gamma Sector, we were only weeks into our journey when my Captain received an urgent message from Admiral Liam Thorne, a decorated military officer who ran the Eden Colony in the nearby Theta Quadrant.

I was on the bridge when the communication first came in and I got a brief glimpse of the Admiral before we were told to clear the room. Knowing of his reputation and the conflicts he’d fought in, I knew he had to be in his mid to late 40s, but the man on the screen looked much younger. He was broad shouldered, beefy and muscular with bright blue eyes and dark brown hair. There might have been a few stray grays here and there, but nothing indicative of man pushing 50. He had elegant but masculine features and an almost scary baritone voice. When I exited through the side door with others, I could have sworn he gazed right at me with an air of recognition.

No more than ten minutes could have passed when a list of names were called out over our general communication speakers. They were all different occupations, but they were all female. I’d just reached my quarters when the fifth name was called out: Cora Sutherland. Confused by what the purpose of the list was in the first place, I ran out into the hallway and caught up my friend Kiley. She had also been called out and was standing in the hall with a look of bewilderment.

You too? What was that for? What are we supposed to do? I’d been reprimanded before for not paying attention to general communications and I didn’t want to get in trouble again.

Kiley took me by the arm. Come on, Cora. They want us to report to the Captain. This feels strange.
