    The Senator - Matilda Martel

    CHAPTER 1

    CLAIRE

His name is Jasper McLaren, Senator Jasper McLaren, and he's more than twice my age. His black hair is going gray, but his bright blue eyes still sparkle with the youthful energy of a man in his twenties. We spoke alone for the first time the day Daddy was sworn into his new congressional seat, and our friendship, if you can call it that, is no accident.

That depraved soul has been eyeing me with no small degree of salacious intent ever since my father was hot on the campaign trail, and he endorsed him at a campaign rally. He was always cordial and kind, nothing out of the ordinary was ever spoken or implied, but there was no mistaking the desire that appeared to simmer underneath the surface of our frequent but always supervised exchanges.

For the past few weeks, as I neared my eighteenth birthday, I've wondered if he would make his seedy intentions known. I may be a virgin, but I'm hardly naïve. He's a forty-year-old man, and I'm not foolish enough to believe he would have much interest in an eighteen-year-old girl beyond a few sexual escapades. Senator McLaren is a single man, long-divorced, in a town where all politicians have wives and families. His reputation as a scoundrel is legendary. With everything I know, he truly is the last man I should consider.

But there's something about him that I can't get out of my head.

He's hard to ignore. Jasper lives two blocks away from my parent's home, and I pass his place every day on my way to school. Every now and again, I see him standing by his window, ogling me as I walk by, smiling devilishly and almost certainly salivating. I'm positive that man is thinking the most unholy thoughts about his colleague's teenage daughter and planning something quite fiendish.

But what is he planning? The curiosity is killing me.

Daddy's been trying to meet with him for weeks, and he continues to swear him off, claiming he doesn't have enough time. I can hardly blame him. My father can be a bit boring and sanctimonious. However, I'm sure if his legs were as long as mine and looked half as good in white knee socks and a short, pleated skirt, he might be able to squeeze him in for an afternoon meeting.

I admit, there are days I add a bit more sway to my hips and bounce to my step, just to give him something to think about at the office all day. It's hard not to encourage that type of lecherous attention when it makes me feel all warm and tingly inside. I've lived a bit of a sheltered life and took longer than most to blossom. You have no idea how long I've waited to be catcalled.

    This is long overdue.

It took me a week to notice that Jasper was timing his return from Capitol Hill at the exact same moment that I walked past his house on my way home. He'd strike up a conversation with me, getting a bit more personal every day, knowing that my eighteenth birthday was just around the corner. Mr. McLaren is no fool. He wasn't making one illicit move until my birthday, but he wanted me to like him and trust him enough to be receptive when I was finally in play. We'd chit-chat on his stoop or take a brisk stroll to the coffee shop. It was a big secret, and I love keeping secrets from my parents.

I felt like such a bad girl.

Although we hadn't seen much of one another in days, on the afternoon of my birthday, he surprises me by waiting outside, looking extra handsome in his English-tailored suit, standing by his door with a bouquet of pink roses in hand.

Happy Birthday, Claire. The corners of his mouth lift into a wicked smile.

Aren't you looking good today? I flirtatiously make my way up the steps and snag my roses.

Not nearly as good as you do. He chuckles.

Of course, you don't. That would be ludicrous. I smell my roses and smirk, eyeing his long, lean, muscular body underneath my lashes. He looks too good for a man in his forties.

Why don't you come in and have a look around. He waves me towards the door, urging me to follow him inside.

    As tempted
