This small but imposing former prison on Steelhouse Lane in the centre of Birmingham opened its doors in 1891 and held prisoners until as recently as 2016. It housed men, women and children, and in its heyday, up to 50 of Birmingham’s hardened criminals would have been kept here at a time.
