In its heydey, the prison held Birmingham’s most hardened criminals

THE HAUNTING:
This small but imposing former prison on Steelhouse Lane in the centre of Birmingham opened its doors in 1891 and held prisoners until as recently as 2016. It housed men, women and children, and in its heyday, up to 50 of Birmingham’s hardened criminals would have been kept here at a time. Despite being modernised in its later years, all the cells and floors retain their original Victorian layout, and there’s even an underground tunnel leading straight into the adjacent courtrooms.
