Chapter One

Afew days after my eighteenth birthday, I met my future husband, Jackson Brooks. He came into our small town to attend the funeral and settle the estate for his aunt, Miss Mary Brooks, a lady I knew and loved. To my surprise, I'd been included in Mary's will, and Jackson needed to reach out to me several times to confirm a few details before he returned to Virginia. Mama grew suspicious right away.
