I bet I can report this as harassment,
I said to myself as I slid the phone back in my pocket.
My deadline for the book I was writing was getting close and my publisher kept sending me emails to remind me about it. As if I could ever forget.
The fact was that I had gotten them used to having my manuscripts way early but, this time I needed every hour in the contract. I was still editing the book. With the Montpelier case and my late research, I hadn’t gotten to write the book on schedule, and I was working my butt off these days, so the publisher could wait until the deadline to get his book.
Lost in my thoughts, I almost bumped into a man who was entering the building at the same time as I did.

Well, look who’s here!
Dylan said, grinning. I smiled back but it turned out not to be enough for him. Come here!
He dropped the file in Spike’s hands and went straight for a hug.
This is new,
I said, patting his shoulder awkwardly. Spike was barely containing a laugh.
I haven’t seen you in ages, give me a break!
Oh, you’re here,
I heard Smith from behind. Release her, Dylan. I need her alive and well.
The younger man pouted, but obeyed. I thanked Smith for his help and followed him into his office.
So, how have you been?
Smith asked, pointing to a chair for me to sit.
Pretty good. I’m catching up with my manuscript but aside from that, everything is fine.
Good, good. How are things with James?
What’s up with that weird tone?
I asked myself, but chose not to say it aloud. "Fine. We’re
