    From Innocuous To Immortal - M. Yakus-Johnson

    Chapter 1

The day started like any other day. I woke up to the alarm clock blaring in my ear at 6:30am and almost threw it clear across the room to get it to stop. Mornings weren’t the best part of my day, usually a fog of confusion set itself into my brain the moment I knew it was time to get up, and no amount of sleep helped stave that off. So daily I woke up this way, confused as to the day, the week, the month and only after a few moments the thought triggered in my brain that it was in fact a work day, and if I had any hope of being on time I needed to get up and moving.

I showered, dressed, made coffee and forced myself to go to work. Today started as another day of the same old thing, coffee, work, lunch, more coffee, work some more and then go home to an empty house. It seemed to me that I was too young to be so engrossed in work and didn’t really have much of a social life to speak of, but it was what it was and I hadn’t done much to change that. I’d be surprised to realize that the day wouldn’t end as all the others did.

I noticed as I got out my very old clunker of a car in the employee parking lot that the sun was actually trying to peek out today. We’d been under a blanket of rain for what seemed like forever, and I welcomed the singing birds, warm sun rays and smell of fresh cut grass. I love the sounds of Spring. It makes it to much easier to face my day when I knew it would be pretty outside. The trees changed to vibrant shades or red, yellow, orange and oddly enough a striking brown. People would come from all over just to catch the sights and snap some pictures. This year we were granted this lovely display in the Spring-time, which usually is only granted in Autumn. Regardless, to me it was normal, comfortable, home.

Entering the office I flipped the lights on. I was the first one here which meant I got the lucky task of pulling any messages off the machine. For some reason this was one of my least favorite things to do. That and filing.

I entered my office and dialed the extension to pull the messages off the line. There weren’t any that were important, as usual, except for one. The man who left the message that simply stated: Bianchi, you know who this is, you better call me today. Otherwise I can not be held responsible.

Boy was that message odd, I thought to myself in the empty office. No one had ever left such a message before and I was sure this wasn’t something to push to the side. A small chill ran down my spine thinking of this strange man saying he couldn’t be held responsible. For what? Even the fact that the man referred to my boss by his last name only seemed strange to me. He was obviously angry and very vague. Silently I dreaded having to hand this message over to Scott when he came in for the day.

Pushing that thought aside I turned on my computer and went to the break room to start a pot of coffee. Just then, Jeannine peeked in and announced "I’m so sorry I’m late, thanks for gathering the messages, Scott would have killed me if he came in early. Even though she had a worried look on her face I replied Don’t thank me until after you hand him his messages!" With a curious look she left the break room and headed to retrieve the stack from my desk. I was secretly very happy I didn’t have to do it anymore. At the same time I felt bad for Jeannine because she was now plagued with this task.

Scott came in as I was in my office drinking my 2nd cup of coffee and looking at the Big Bear account. We’re an advertising agency and Big Bear is one of our largest accounts, hence, he entrusted to little old me.

I’ve been working here at Bianchi Advertising Consultants Inc. for about 3 years now and rapidly became Scott’s most trusted agent. He pays me well, offers good benefits, 401k plan matching and lets me work from home when I’m not feeling so great instead of having to take PTO. I can’t complain, he’s always been great to me.

About 5 minutes later I heard Scott slam the door to his office closed and could hear some pretty loud, stern talking from him in his office into the phone. I tried not to eavesdrop but I was sure that he was returning that call, the vague one that didn’t even leave a callback number. I almost laughed at the look of horror on Jeannine’s face since she was sitting just outside his office and probably jumped out of her chair when the door slammed.

My phone rang and I scrambled back to my desk to answer it. Daniella Richardson. My boss was on the other end. Daniella, can you come into my office for a moment? I need to speak with you he said sounding agitated. I was taken back so I just replied Sure, I’ll be right there and hung up. No one wanted to enter that man’s office knowing he was mad, even his favorite employee. With a few calming breaths I got up from behind my desk and started to walk out of my office. I wanted to stay in my comfort zone, but the boss called, and when he did you better respond.

I walked very hesitantly over to his office and opened the door. Come in, sit Dannie he said to me. He’d used my nickname which was fine by me since it had to mean he wasn’t completely out of his mind with rage at the moment. I tossed him a weak smile.

Dannie, I need to discuss a few matters with you, but here and now is not the time. If you are free.. he paused not exactly sure how to continue.. maybe we can have a business dinner and we can talk things over. I noticed the business approach he was trying to take but the look in his eyes was hopeful and a tad desperate looking. It was as if he was hoping I’d say yes, that he didn’t want me to reject him.

Uh, yea, that’s fine. What ever you need Scott I replied. I looked at him sitting there behind his desk, and for the first time I really looked at him. He was my boss, therefore completely off limits no matter what. But his eyes are such a hypnotizing gray, like the dense fog after a thunder storm. He’s about 10 years older than I so he had to be about 45 but extremely handsome. Small splashes of gray run through out his otherwise deep brown hair, and it only makes him look more distinguished, not old. He is about 6 feet tall, even in my heals he has a few inches over me. And I noticed the slightest dimple in his right cheek as he looked over at me from across the desk.

I had to snap out of my silent assessment of him because he just sat there quietly watching me scan his features. Of course the last part I was able to catalog to memory were his broad shoulders and muscular arms. I never noticed any of these things about Scott before, but I sure did now. I felt a slight twinge of pink forming on my cheeks.

Ok then. I’ll pick you up at your house at say 7:30, Is that ok for you? he asked with the slightest grin on his face. He definitely saw me analyzing him after accepting his dinner invitation. We’d been out for business lunches before but never dinner, and he always told me ahead of time which account we’d be working on. Today was different though. No indication of the reason for the meeting, certainly no explanation of why dinner instead of lunch, and no clue as to the barely hidden smile.

Ok I said as I got up and headed to the door. I almost tripped over my own shoes as I turned around. I had to get out of his office before the smell of his cologne, the sly smirk on his face, or further evaluation of his handsome face and well built body made me blush deeper.

Back in the comfort of my own 15x15 I mentally slapped myself for acting so foolish and sat back down refocusing my energy on Black Bear. Anything else might bring me back to the thoughts of the man in the other room, and whatever his invitation entailed.

The day passed in a blur. If all work days ended so quickly I’d have been grateful. I said bye to everyone in one fell swoop calling out and waving as I made my way to the door.

At home, I knew the majority of my evening would consist of getting ready for this meeting but I had no idea where we were going. I decided for casually dressy. I didn’t want to risk looking too much like a date but I also didn’t want to prance around in jeans and a t-shirt if we went anywhere that he tended to take our clients.

I showered and washed my hair, got dressed and waited for his call. I knew better, but honestly, I felt like a woman waiting for her boyfriend pick her up for a night on the town. I realized I shouldn’t have taken such a close look at Scott today, it did weird things to my brain. Things that could be potentially dangerous.

    Chapter 2

He honked the horn when he got to my apartment and I knew not to keep the boss waiting. Letting myself in on the passenger side of his car I flashed him a semi confident smile.
