The First Day

I SIT huddled in the corner on the crowded bus, struggling to put on my makeup as we lurch around bends and jolt over bumps. Not surprisingly, I’m making a bit of a mess of the job. Already I’ve managed to poke the lipliner pencil straight up my left nostril three times, and there’s a wonky streak of lipstick heading haphazardly towards my jawline. Hmm . . . very fetching. Just the thing to make a perfect impression on my first day in a brand-new job.

Of course I shouldn’t be doing this on the way to work at all. Trust me to find myself so disastrously short of time! Oh, today was supposed to be so organised. I’d sat down last night and written out a getting-to-work-on-time schedule!
