    Chapter 1

I placed my cup in the same spot on Dr Brown’s glass table I always did, after taking the initial sip. It was my way of discreetly bracing myself before our therapy session.

I didn’t dare to ask myself why I was still seeing her, after all these weeks, if I dreaded it so much.

So, Rob. How was your week? she asked me, as she flipped to a clean page.

Good. Nothing out of the ordinary.

The quiet settled between us was almost material and heavy.

It was the end of summer, with surprisingly sunny days pretending it was still August.

    Melissa watched me watch her.

    What? I finally cracked.

How’s the whole giving up on investigating thing going? she asked, not breaking eye contact.

This woman was fierce, and she knew every little dirty trick in the book. If I didn’t know any better, I would’ve thought I had trained her in interrogation techniques.

    It’s fine. It’s... going.

She snorted and jotted something down in her notes.

You haven’t made yourself? Do you think this is something you have to force yourself to do? Retirement?

I sighed. No. I know it’s the right thing. It’s just...

Tell me how you feel when you think about telling Smith you’re done with being a PI?

Familiar chills ran through my body and a sudden, albeit faint, need to vomit came at the forefront. My hand went to my chest instinctively.

As soon as I realized the gesture, I pulled my hand to my side and tried to hide the fact that I fist pumping my nervousness away.

    Rob? Melissa insisted.

It’s not a feeling. It’s more physical. Cold sweat, nausea, I don’t know.

An irresistible urge to dance, perhaps?

    What?!

Melissa’s face showed no hint of amusement.

Are you crazy? I feel like something bad is about to happen, it’s dreadful. Do you think this has anything to do with dancing?

    Dread.

She made another note, then looked back at me.

    Yeah, dread.

    Fear.

    Yes, dammit!

    She nodded. I took
