    Chapter 1

The shuffling of paper felt relaxing in the sunny afternoon. I blinked the sudden sleepiness away and sipped from my coffee for reinforcements.

It seems our caseload is getting smaller, boss, DeMarco commented without lifting his eyes from the screen of his laptop.

I guess the momentum is wearing off. You know, you were once famous, now you’re just regular, I said and surprised myself with the fact that I wasn’t entirely joking.

    Ha ha, Rob, very funny.

    I wasn’t joking, Smith, I confessed.

Alright, so we have three completed investigations this month. What’s the status on the on-going ones? he asked his team.

Three on-going so far, Spike began. A Missing Persons that Dylan and I are working, which is nearly done. We only need to compile everything and send it to the Police.

    Why?

They asked us nicely. They also have an open case on this boy, and, as they suspected, he’s only a repeat run-away. So they need something to close the case.

Then, there’s the corporate investigation. We’re all working it, it’s just too messy.

Suspected embezzlement always is, my dear.

I looked at Smith and wondered if it was just me or he really sounded like a grandpa.

Any new cases? I asked. I wasn’t really interested but I felt like I should say something.

Yeah. Three new Missing Persons and a dozen more cheating spouses. I’m not sure we should take them all.

    Glamorous, I commented.

Didn’t we have that woman the other day? Give me a second. Here, Dylan intervened, offering Smith what looked like an empty file.

Oh, this one. Yeah, I remember. On the bright side, with our waning fame the crazy ones wane as well.

    What do you mean?

This woman came in last week, asking us to prove her cousin isn’t crazy. As in, mental, Smith explained.

    And?

"The woman is in a freaking
