    Acknowledgement

I have a few people who must get acknowledged for this book. My father David, for helping me with the creating how the vampires were made. And to all the friends in my life who have supported me along the way. To Lukas, for giving me ideas on how to end the story, and to fellow Co-workers at Wal-Mart, Michelle, Tina, Alex, and everyone else who was even interested in the story thanks. Also, to Codey and Adam for believing in me, and giving me the understanding of how difficult writing can be.

    Chapter 1

It all started the day the new student arrived. Everything that I knew came crashing down around me. I have to tell you that I am basically being worked all day long. I don’t get much rest. My step brother and sister were about as vile as they came, and just as stupid. They are both two years older than me, and are seniors in their final semester. I can tell you that without me doing their school work; they would have flunked out, and would be living at home spending their dad’s money. Not that it is much of a difference now.

The only problem that I have is that the money was inherited from my mother after she died in a car crash, and I was left in hell. I have some money that my step father can’t touch, and it’s not for a lack of trying. But, this money was put into a CD and can’t be touched even by me until I am eighteen. I know he is counting the days until I turn, so he can make me get the money out for him. I am not even sure how much it’s worth. I am also counting the day, because in two years I am cashing out the CD, and leaving.

Oh, by the way, I’m Matthew Jones. I am six foot, I’m thin, and have an athletic build. I also have a light complexion, hazel eyes, and brown, shoulder length hair. I am not a nerd, but I keep a B average in school, and I excel in English. The teacher told me one day after we had to write a poem for an assignment, that I have raw talent, and that maybe I should consider entering a writing competition. I really considered it, but I needed a parent or guardian to sign it, and anything I wanted to do or was passionate about, I was denied. John, my step father, didn’t want me to have joy.

I was used to this life style. I was also used to being ignored, by my family. They treated me as if I was invisible. This to me was an improvement. I mean it, I was glad when they acted like this. I was able to get my work done, without incident. Most of the time, I avoided threats, insults, and abuse. But, wasn’t lucky all the time. A couple times, I went to school with a black eye, and a bruised wrist. The teachers were concerned, but every time they questioned me, I had no choice but to deny it.

I was always under the eagle eye of my step siblings. They had blond hair, and blue eyes. They were twins. Tom was the oldest. The days went on as usual for ten years nothing happened. But, on that fateful Friday, everything changed. It was eight in the morning, and first hour didn’t start for another half hour. I saw the new guy talking to my brother and sister. They were in the popular crowd because they were in every sport possible. They have led our school to championship, after championships. When I saw the new guy I thought to myself, great, another poor sucker about to be corrupted. He saw me looking at them, and instead of looking irritated, he looked curious.

He seemed to know me, or acted like he recognized me. Who’s that? I heard him ask. I felt everyone’s eyes burn into me. No one, He is a loser. Forget him. Tammi said. Who is he? The new student repeated. Tom sighed. Matt Jones. He’s our step brother. Tammi hissed. Really, why do you treat him like that? He asked with curiosity, and annoyance. Isn’t it obvious? Tammi asked. She didn’t hear the anger in his tone He gives us a lot of grief, and a lot of attitude. Totally, man you don’t know what he puts us though. Tom agreed.

Maybe you don’t know what you put him though? Tammi and Tom laughed. They didn’t realize that their new friend was looking like he could kill them. I believed in that moment that he could. He had blond hair, with a blood red streak on his right side. And for a second I actually was convinced that his eyes were glowing red for a moment. Hey, we still have about twenty minutes, why don’t we show you around the school? Good idea! Tom agreed. They dragged him around the corner out of sight. I didn’t understand his curiosity in me, but I wasn’t going to let it bother me.

The day passed as usual, the only difference was at lunch. The new guy escaped his groupies, and found me outside sitting under a tree as far away from everyone as I could get. I admit it wasn’t far enough, if I was going to be bugged. I heard his approach before he even started to speak. Hello- He began, Don’t bother introducing yourself. We can’t be friends. I’m not falling for that false politeness. I said without looking up. Did I do something? No, you haven’t done anything. But, I am not giving you the opportunity. He waited a few seconds. Is there something that you need? Torture, insults, or did you come to beat the shit out of me?

Would you believe that I just want to talk? I’d like to. I thought. No, I wouldn’t. I don’t trust anyone. And since your friends are on their way right now, I suggest that you walk away. That a threat? No, I don’t make threats. All I am giving you is advice. Jaise, is he bothering you? Tammi hissed at me. Her eyes had become slits. No. He said. This surprised me. You don’t have to cover for him. Tom said. He wasn’t bothering me. I was bothering him. Leave him alone. His tone got him looks of shock. I shook my head in exasperation, and walked away.

Fifth hour was going to start now. I didn’t know what that was about. That was really confusing. He defended me, even when I gave him no reason to. And I gave him attitude. It didn’t make much sense. The rest of the day passed as a blur. I made the long walk home, and found that I was first to arrive. I grabbed a clean pair of clothes, and went to take a shower. Afterwards, I went to start a load of laundry, and found a guest in my bedroom. Oh, yes, I sleep in the basement.

Matt, can we talk now, since there is no one around? Jaise, right, this is who you are? He nodded. Why are you so interested in getting to know me? Maybe I need a friend who isn’t a fake. He said simply. Why do I find that hard to believe? Why should I lie about that? He asked. I don’t know. I believe that you mean what you say. But, I think you’re not telling me the entire reason. Great start at being a friend. I said sarcastically. Matt, you’re right. It is not the entire reason. But, if I told you, you wouldn’t believe me. Try me. I’m not gullible. But, if it is reasonable . . ." He looked at me like he was trying to read me.

I learned a long time ago, not to show emotions. Even when I was feeling pain, It did me no good, so, I don’t know what he saw in me, but he looked confused. What are you staring at me like that for? I’m trying to see if you’re trustworthy. He said. I raised my eyebrows at him. And, what have you determined about me? I prompted. You are, you can trust, and be trusted. But, you have no one to give your trust to. I smirked. Wrong, I gave my trust to someone a while ago. He betrayed me. He looked at me. I know you can’t be referring to me. No, I am not! I am referring to Jack. We used to be friends despite how popular he is. But, Tammi, and Tom got a hold of him one night.

I’m sorry to hear that. I shrugged off his apology. Don’t be. I find it easier to distance myself from people. No matter whom they claim to be, or what they offer. That’s a terrible way to live. No, it’s a safe way to live. We stared at each other for a while. Then, I heard the front door open. Tammi and Tom are home! Damn. You should go hang out with them. I know that is why you’re over here right? Technically, But, I only agreed to come over, so I could talk to my- Jaise? Jaise where are you?! Tom called. Go." I didn’t give him the usual attitude I have been.

I sounded defeated even to myself. I didn’t know why. Maybe I have been lying to myself thinking that I don’t need anyone to trust in. Maybe it was about time, I tried to trust someone again. I just didn’t know what to do. But, I didn’t have a lot of time to think. I had a lot of cleaning to do, and the house had to be spotless by the time John got home. Hey do you want to go to the movies? Tom asked. Sure. Jaise said. Matt? He turned to ask me. What? Do you want to go to the movies? No, thanks, I have a lot of work John asked me to do.

I made it sound like I was doing him a favor. Oh, come on. Surely, you can do the work when you get back? No, I doubt it. John said it was important. Guys, couldn’t you convince your dad to cut him some slack one time? They looked at me like I was poison to them. Jaise, really don’t worry about it. You guys go have some fun. Tom, can’t you call your dad? I-I can. Well? He didn’t have many options. He pulled out his cell, and dialed. After a couple seconds he said, dad, hi. I have a question for you. A slight pause, and then, Yes, um, do you think it would be okay if matt comes with Tammi, Jaise, and me to the movies.

Another pause and, Jaise is the friend that we asked if he could stay the night remember? He frowned. Okay, right dad. Thanks. Bye. he hung up. Well, Matt. You have permission to finish your cleaning when we get back. Good. Let’s go. Tammi drove, and Tom sat in the passenger seat. Jaise and I took the backseat. Strange music blared from their speakers. I could tell by the look on Jaise’s face, that he didn’t like this music. The theatre was only a few miles away. What movie are we going to see? Tammi asked. I don’t know. What’s playing? Jaise asked. Tom gave a list of movies, and everyone agreed of the one movie that sounded the most interesting.

It turned out to be kind of sad. A seventeen year old went mad, and on a revenge run to get the bastard that killed his younger sister. She was totally innocent. I don’t understand get that. I guess from what the killers said, was the boy’s father took something of great importance to them. But, he had no knowledge of anything of value. Three years after his sister died, at seventeen he went to track them down. He took lessons in hand to hand, and practiced shooting several types of guns. He was completely driven with grief. Especially after how he found his sister, Bloody, and mangled, and I won’t tell you what they did to her.

It was awful. I thought the movie had a good storyline, but it wasn’t my type of movie. I don’t mind horror, but not that. On the way back to the house, the movie was all they could talk about. I leaned against the window, and drowned everyone else out. I finally made it back home, and went to start cleaning. I didn’t get much of a chance. John was waiting for us when we arrived home. Matt! You know your tasks when you get home. This is breaking the rules! He snapped. I saw Tom and Tammi smirk at each other.

Jaise wasn’t supposed to hear anything, but he heard everything. What’s the matter? You’re Jaise? He nodded. Are you responsible for getting Matt out of doing his tasks? Well, yes. But, I asked Tom to call you and ask for your permission. He said that you agreed to have him finish his tasks when he got home. Well, I assure you, I didn’t agree to anything. He snapped.

I apologize for this. This was my fault. He glared at
