Alkaline Diet: The Basics
A lot of breakout diets have sprouted especially in the year 2013. In the previous years, diet programs were only directed towards weight loss goals. Now, diet regimens are not only intended for eliminating those unwanted pounds but also for optimizing health. One of these diets is called the Alkaline Diet. It promises a wide range of weight loss and health benefits using a more scientific and systematic eating approach.
This chapter shall equip you with significant information about the Alkaline Diet—its basis, benefits, and safety concerns. You will also know if you need to switch into it through the common tell-tale signs discussed below.
The Alkaline Diet is a style of eating that involves the consumption of the so-called “alkaline” foods that are believed to neutralize the body’s pH level to 7.35 to 7.45. To achieve this, a food ratio of 80% alkaline and 20% acidic foods is followed. In particular, an Alkaline Diet daily menu includes more consumption of vegetables and less intake of proteins and grains.
What is the basis of the Alkaline Diet?
It is believed that the way we eat at present is far different from that of our hunter-gatherer ancestors whose diet was based on plant and animal foods. The introduction of agriculture has altered our style of eating drastically. For instance, grains have started to be served. The use of salt and sugar, as well as the consumption of meat have increased. At the same time, cheese, milk and other milk products have been embraced by people.
All these food items produce a certain amount of acid in the blood after the body digests, absorbs, and metabolizes them. This only implies that our diet has become more acid-producing. What is even worse is that fruits and vegetables that contain no or little acid are considered the last options.
The Alkaline Diet is based on the premise that our eating habit must be slightly alkaline. This means that our blood should maintain its normal pH level which ranges from 7.35 to 7.45.
