Chapter One: Introduction
The History Boys
by British playwright Alan Bennett first premiered on 18th of May 2004 at the Royal National Theatre in London.
It is believed that large part of the play is inspired by the playwright’s own youth. It is also inspired by the time he spent in grammar school and the process that he went through to gain access to Oxford.
The play made its Broadway debut on 23rd of April 2006 at the Broadhurst Theatre. It proved to be a highly successful play with one hundred and eighty five performances.
The History Boys
received several awards. It also won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New play in the year 2005 and Tony Award for Best Play in 2006.
During an interview, Bennett described the play draws on the hardships which he went through in the process of gaining a scholarship for higher education. He said that Oxford and Cambridge were both mysterious and daunting to him, just like it is felt by the boys in the play.
The play was also critically acclaimed and it won the Evening Standard and Critics’ Circle Awards for Best Play, the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Play, and the South Bank Award.
The play has also found its place in educational institutions in several parts of the world. It is still very popular with the audiences and the drama lovers.
