    Chapter One: Introduction

The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoyevsky was first published as a serial in The Russian Messenger between 1868 and 1869.

It is considered as one of the best novels written by this Great Russian author. It is said to be one of the most brilliant literary achievement of the Golden Age of Literature in Russia.

The novel revolves around Prince Lev Nikolayevich Myshkin. This twenty six years old Prince comes back to Russia after spending many years at a Swiss sanatorium.

He has a very trusting nature and his naiveté is scorned by the society of St. Petersburg. He finds it difficult to find his place in that society.

Myshkin comes to be at the centre of a struggle between a beautiful kept woman and a virtuous and pretty young girl. Both of these women win his affection.

To his misfortune, his goodness of heart causes disaster. An impression is created on the minds of the readers that a sanatorium may be the best place for a saint because the world is obsessed with money, power, and sexual conquest.

It is a highly descriptive novel, and the narration is simply spellbinding.
