“Light In August” by William Faulkner was first published in 1932. The novel belongs to the modernist literary and the Southern Gothic genres.
The story is set in the writers’ present day. It happens to be the interwar period. The story revolves around two strangers who visit Jefferson, Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi, at different times. It is a fictional county which is based on Faulkner’s home, Lafayette County, Mississippi.
In the initial part of the novel the story focuses on Lena Grove, a young pregnant white woman from Alabama. She is looking for the father of her unborn child.

The story is set in the writer’s present day. It happens to be the interwar period. The story revolves around two strangers who visit Jefferson, Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi, at different times. It is a fictional county which is based on Faulkner’s home, Lafayette County, Mississippi.
In the initial part of the novel the story focuses on Lena Grove, a young pregnant white woman from Alabama. She is looking for the father of her unborn child.
The focus of the plot then shifts to explore the life of Joe Christmas. He has settled in Jefferson and he passes as white, but he secretly believes that he has some black ancestry.
Through a series of flashbacks, Christmas’s early life is described. Then the plot once again begins with his living and working with Lucas Burch, the father of Lena’s child. Lucas
