When The Times reviewed Lewis Carroll’s only one line was needed to dismiss it completely: ‘(it) may best be described as an excellent piece of nonsense.’ On the other hand, the reviewer had only praise for John Tenniel’s drawings for the book. Other magazines and newspapers had much more favourable reviews of this classic work in the children’s books genre.
