I don’t know why he’s picking on me—it’s not like I mean something to Zav—but somehow I’ve gotten stuck in the middle of dragon politics. If you think that sounds like a nightmare, you’re right. 

If I can’t figure out a way to help my friend with the werewolves while keeping these dragons from tearing me apart, we’re both going to end up flatter than the deck chairs when Zav lands on the roof of my apartment building.

If you enjoy urban fantasy, but find it's gotten kind of stale, this series might be for you. I first listened to a novella from the series that was pretty high up in numerical order. I liked it enough to start with book 1 (Sinister Magic), and I went straight to this novel, #2 in Buroker's Val Torvald series. (Apologize for any misspellings, happens with audiobooks.) Val is an interesting character, someone who starts out without any desire for a deeper psychological understanding of what makes her tick, but asthma related health issues force her to come terms with many things about the morality of her job and how she lives her life. It's also refreshing to have the main character in her 40s, even if she "looks 10 years younger" due to an elf father. And her military boss Willard is mid-40s, super tough, and a woman with a cat. The 3rd female character I'm less sure of, because I don't like the idea of freelance weapons dealers, cute or not. Dmitri is a fun character (dwarf blood, so he makes defensive lawn art), and the various non-human characters like Sav (dragon), Zoltan (vampire), and trolls, dark elves, etc. are well-thought out. I enjoy Buroker's use of pop culture as well, kind of like the humor an older Buffy might use in quips as she slays. If you like shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and books like the Harry Dresden files, I recommend this series.

Another great book in the series.
I am really enjoying the sassyness and quick witted responses in this book. It’s very refreshing.
