About this audiobook

His mother was one of the most powerful wizards in the Nurian Empire until she abandoned her people to become a notorious pirate. That choice doomed the family she left behind to a life of disgrace.

Yanko White Fox doesn’t remember his mother, but as the only gifted child in the family, he is expected to erase the mark she left on them all. With an affinity for earth magic and communicating with animals, he’s not the most natural candidate to become a warrior mage, but it’s the only sure route back into the Great Chief’s good graces. He has resigned himself to training for that destiny, whether it matches his passions or not.

Long before he’s ready for his first battle, insurrection comes to his distant corner of the empire. Rebels take over the salt mine his family manages and slay the only relative who ever supported Yanko. On the heels of the tragedy, a courier brings a message from the Great Chief’s son. Whether he is prepared or not, Yanko must undertake a quest, one that could save millions of lives… or fail utterly, leaving him dead, his family forgotten, and his people the victims of starvation and endless war.

A good book 1 that makes me look forward to what the series may offer.

Loved the story, not the narrator. Took me several times to get involved with the book. I'm a huge fan of her regular narrator's and the change was difficult for me.

I love pretty much all of Lindsay Buroker's books, however, this narrator was super slow. I had to speed it up to 1.5 speed in order for him to sound normal paced.

Shoutout for Lindsay putting her books on Everand! Love her audiobooks! Unfortunately, with this book, I DNF at 50%. Not because it's a bad book, on the contrary. The narration was the big issue. I love the narrator from the other books, she really brings Lindsay's books to life. This male narrator wasn't bad, but I couldn't get used to his voice and how he portrayed the characters. Vivienne Leheny is a master in portraying all kind of people/supernatural beings and the difference between both narrators was just too big to enjoy the story. Often I could imagine how Vivienne would have narrated words and phrases, but listening to the actual narration made those moments very disappointing. Lindsay must have had a good reason to go with a different narrator, since her other books are (almost?) all narrated by Vivienne. But I cant help and wish that this series was narrated by Vivienne, too.

3 stars, beacuse I think the book itself is great, but the audio unfortunately doesn't do it for me.
