About this audiobook

A thrilling tale of attraction blooming despite adversity, Siryn Sueng’s The Charon Worshiper is a pulse pounding chase for justice and love. It’s been three long years since Detective Avani Roman failed to catch the serial killer that terrorized the streets of San Jose, dubbed The Charon Worshiper. Haunted by the loss of the ten victims, and the loss of his partner in the line of duty, Avani pours over the cold case files every spare moment he has. It’s the first and only cold case in his long career.

Detective Ryo Harata started his career in a small town in Idaho. But after he’s forced to transfer out to San Jose, California, Ryo’s last chance at pursuing the career he loves rests in the surly hands of his new partner and mentor. Avani doesn’t hide his displeasure at being assigned a new, young-blooded partner. Begrudgingly showing Ryo the ropes, Avani tries to keep his emotional distance. But when their next crime scene is hauntingly familiar, complete with the calling card of The Charon Worshiper, Avani has no choice but to accept Ryo’s help. Following up on new and old leads, Ryo proves excellent at his job, and the way he looks in uniform doesn’t hurt either.

As Ryo and Avani gather clues, all the pieces finally begin to point in the same direction. But with the window to catch their killer before they strike again rapidly closing, will their lives and growing affection for one another be enough to bring about justice?

Simplistic and thinly researched, I found it a fluffy bit of gay wish fulfillment for the most part. The protagonists are pleasant enough young men but their thought processes seem to be guided mostly by their testicles. The villainess is a one-dimensional personification of evil. The secondary villains are a pair of thugs with badges who clearly have spam for brains.
