About this audiobook

This wasn't in the contract.

Simon Quigley had no idea what to expect when he agreed to do this for the money, but the eight-foot-tall pink alien isn't what he was expecting. For starters, Simon's straight.

And Mohrn isn't a girl.

The contract? It's unbreakable.

It's going to be a long five years...

Book 1 in the Maxim Colonies series. This sci-fi/space opera romance features a male human and a non-binary alien pairing, a "mail-order bride" for hire trope, m-preg, aliens who look like aliens, smol and tall pairing, and a guaranteed HEA!

Editor's Note

M-Preg Romance...

Richardson does her own take on the wildly popular m-preg and human/alien romances in “Jailmates.” A human male signs himself up to be a mate to a non-binary alien — who’s also eight feet tall and pink. Richardson is skillful enough to make this one-note riff into a symphony of emotion.

    Such an amazing story.
It was slow to start, as most reviews stated, but I have to admit I enjoyed it.
The start was like building blocks to really understand and be able to appreciate the moment of FUCK YOU!
Would love to read more of there future, if the author decided to write a "holiday" story for all the characters.
    Please. Please. Please!

Very creative and original series. More focus on law and culture and personal experience than on violent action. More of an anthropological sci-fi read than action/adventure.

WOW!! Unexpectedly imaginative , hot sexy , heartwarming , suspenseful and enthralling story.
    Excellent narration.

Not a fan. I find that alien liaisons are not for me. As a piece literature it needs much work; to wordy, too repetitive. Too much internal dialogue that does little to advance the story. Could not make myself finish it.
I am not inclined to try other works by this author.

The story line sounds so interesting but the over repeat of the same thoughts over and over again just slightly reword drove me crazy and info of subject of contract only one part over and over again stop me from listening further. I bet the story is interesting however this books reputation writing still isnt for me.

This was an elaborately, convoluted, confusing slog. It was boring, too long, and repetitive. The contracts and laws... I give the author points for creativity, but this could have benefited from more editing and definitely shortening. The narration was not good. I finished the book only because I had gotten so far in that I became invested and wanted to know how it all played out. There were some parts that were good, but overall, I did not truly enjoy this.

There is a LONG build up and lots of repetition, and inner monolog, but once the 2 Main characters actually meet the story is really good.

The book is kinda slow, repetitive, and a little boring.

Very slow start. We don’t meet the love interest until 1/3 through the book and it’s so mind-numbingly boring before then that I almost DNF. But I stuck with it and finally just couldn’t care enough about the main characters to continue past 2/3 of the way in.
The narrator was good but a little monotone.
Super interesting plot and world building that ultimately didn’t provide the reader (listener) with a super interesting moment worth the chapters and chapters and chapters spent in the first character’s perspective.

don't let the title stop you from reading this. I LOVE THIS BOOK. It is not sleazy, trashy - nor does the book go into being gay- the alien is neutral- and this is covered really well. The modifications Simon had were smirk worthy. Just the book i needed.

Wow! Okay so that was definitely a rollercoaster of wtf am I listening to and TMI feelers but it gave ALL the feels and I am not sure a book has ever made me laugh so damn hard!

This isba slow burn story. It is very heavy with information about the fictional planets law and medical procedures. I enjoyed the book but as I said it takes a while to get anywhere.

I'm glad I slogged through to the end. TBH I skimmed through the chapters 5~13 because there was so much tedious world building. Every detail was given and I honestly think those chapters weren't necessary. But after the two MC met it became a sweet love story that pulled at my heart and I didn't put it down.

I get that it was probably done for Simons character development but the amount of misgendering in this book is genuinely upsetting. Especially the dismissive "whatever" in his internal dialogue whenever he bothers to correct himself. And don't get me started on the trans panic moment, seriously?! The fact that they genuinely care for each other and the compelling storyline is the only reason I didn't dnf this in a heartbeat. If you're going to write about non-binary and trans coded characters maybe think that trans people like me will read it.

This reminded me of those movies where the viewer needs to put a bit of emotional and intellectual engagement to full experience what it happening in the movie.

It is a wonderful book, so well thought out and incredibly intelligent. The world creation is elite. I really enjoyed the foundation chapters, which is where many people seem to have lost interest. The author did a great job here and the insight given made the story much stronger.

Absolutely enjoyed Simon's confidence and cocky carefree manner. Never thought I'd enjoy a cocky attitude in a character. It suited him to take control from the get go. Anyone who stopped reading this too early, really missed out.

And the love story between these two is extraordinary. Just give yourself a chance, read it. It is such a lovely story

I wasn’t sure when I first started this if I would like it but it was surprisingly interesting. There was enough build up in the beginning to keep me engaged. The only thing that actually bothered me was the constant misgendering. He knew they were not a “she” but kept calling them that. I’m not even part of the lgbtq+ community and I was offended for them ?

I wasn’t expecting such a SWEET, lovely story. I’m not sure what I was expecting but it wasn’t this, and I am so pleasantly delighted by it. I actually chose this because I’d just finished a really emotionally draining novel and needed something that wouldn’t make me overly wrought with tender feelings (I was wrong!! Because this evoked some definite emotion in me, though it wasn’t too heavy or hurtful—even if some of the subject matter was quite relevant to our current human climate of acceptance/bigotry.) If I hadn’t listened to the audio version, I likely wouldn’t have gotten passed the first few chapters because it’s full of a lot of dense, world-building information that feels overwhelming, but it’s worth getting through to understand where the story ends up. My favorite thing, by far, is Simon’s sweet, caring, compassionate nature, and his need to care for the people he loves no matter what—no matter how it looks different from what he’s always held as his own identity. I love that he didn’t hold onto his biases just because of how he’d “always been,” and he allowed himself to immediately begin the process of growth and acceptance that allowed him to care for someone he was never expecting to meet, let alone love. I’ll be reading the rest of the stories because it’s quite well-done!

This is an absolute rollercoaster of "wtf am I listening to" moments. The line in Chapter 15: "Not to get too TMI, but I think we're past that point" is the understatement of the CENTURY. I listened to the entire thing out of almost scientific morbid curiosity. Which is probably the mindset of the author while writing this too. High quality writing though.

The beginning was very slow with a lot of contract talk, and then even more medical stuff. But once the two mains meet the story really picks up. Lots of sweet and juicy scenes and they made such a sweet and adorable couple. The alien world building was also really interesting with several different kinds of aliens. There was even a good little detective element in there too. I was a little bored in the beginning but all in all the whole story was definitely worth it.

OMG what am I listening to. I am in chapter 8 and this book is so boring. The main characters repeats the same mantra over and over and over again. Nothing wrong with taking about your mom and sister but this is a bit too much. Is so repetitive. Not sure if I’m going to be able to finish. Nothing exiting or remotely interesting has happen yet

I loved this story. Though it did have a good amount of sex it wasn’t very detailed or emotional but this story was very funny. I enjoyed the main character he was quite funny and easy to relate to. Definitely worth reading. Very interesting.

I've been avoiding this book for over 2-3 weeks because I am not a Sci-Fi person but oh my God I regret avoiding it for that long because I am left speechless, and I Am in love with this book. I love everything about it. Their chemistry, the energy between them, the joke, The Sassy remarks. I hope that the second book is as amazing as this one and will make me laugh, cry, scream and just wish I read this book in private instead of sometimes in public.
