About this audiobook

The Soldier
Tough, gorgeous soldier of fortune Reilly (Whatever his other name is) promised his best friend he’d take care of his wife and baby, bringing them out of the war-torn South American country they were stuck in. He was expecting a spoiled, glamorous socialite, not a quiet, stubborn girl devoted to the tiny infant.

The Nun
Carlie Forrest had been waiting a long time to take her final vows, but caring for the new-born baby of a dead woman was more important, leaving her stuck in the abandoned convent. She wasn’t going to just hand the baby over to a man who looked like he’d never changed a diaper in his life, and she didn’t mind pretending to be the dead socialite in order to keep the child safe.

The Baby
Everyone wants him – the rebels, the dead dictator’s army, the rich American grandparents, and Carlie. Can she let him go when the safest place was cold and heartless?

The Problem
He’s all business – he has no intention of falling for his best friend’s widow. She’s all business – she doesn’t want to fall in love with this big, tough, gorgeous man.

But love and trouble don’t listen to good intentions, not when you’re thrown together with your unexpected and inconvenient soul mate.

Editor's Note

Outlandish in the right ways…

You might think it’d be hard to live up to the outlandish promise of this book’s title, but Anne Stuart manages it. Set in a fictional South American country, an ex-soldier is sent to rescue his buddy’s wife, a woman who’s recently given birth. Only the wife has died, a future nun has taken charge of the baby, and the soldier doesn’t believe she’s not his friend's hard-partying wife. Add in drug cartels hard on their heels, a political uprising, and the heat of the jungle, and it’s a romantic suspense that is over-the-top in all the right ways.

What our readers think

Readers find this title to be a mixed bag. Some reviewers enjoyed the well-written story, believable characters, and unique setting. They found the narration excellent and were drawn in by the action, danger, and romance. However, there were negative reviews that criticized the non-consensual elements, excessive romance, and lack of suspense. Overall, readers recommend this book for those who enjoy a great romance with some suspense, but caution that it may not be suitable for everyone.

Really enjoyed this book. I love a bit of romance/suspense. I loved that it was different, like where it happened, what happened, who were the main characters. And I love when the male character has the female character all figured out, and with time he realises he got it wrong. Really good, so good it got me looking at other books from this author.

I enjoyed this book. The main story was well-written and had good pacing. The suspense was fairly mild, but it was used well and the romantic tension was decent. I haven't read very much by Anne Stuart, but I'm liking what I've read thus far, enough that I will probably go looking for more of her work.

As for this book, I'm a sucker for forced proximity romance and this one was a bit different from most of the others I've read. The setting was unique and while the main plot had its clichéd moments... well, let's face it, what romance story doesn't? Everything worked fairly well together and kept my interest throughout. I even stopped listening for several months, for reasons unrelated to the book itself, and would occasionally remember it and think about what might happen next. I finally had a chance to finish it and I'm really glad I did.

My biggest criticism with the entire book is the epilogue. It seemed a bit, I don't know, heavy-handed, maybe? I usually enjoy epilogues that depict a brief slice of the domestic bliss a few years after the main story ends, but this one felt somewhat excessive. It's hard to explain, but I suspect anyone who's familiar with this in books may have an idea what I'm talking about.

The book has good bones. A soldier, a nun and a baby make for an interesting story. (SPOILER ALERT) However, I could have done with the molestation. The heroine told him not to touch her and tried to push him off several times and he said no “this will help you go to sleep”. And then had the nerve to be satisfied with himself because he was gracious enough to not take it any farther ?. Touching someone without their consent is never ok. Also the end with the 9 kids?? maybe im being a jerk, but that doesn’t sound like much of a happily ever after to me. Anyways I wish the author would rewrite the book. Because it could make for a really good read, but is currently overshadowed by the non-consensual sex.

This book has it all. It's superbly narrated, with characters you can't help but love. It captures your interest from the first word and keeps you engrossed until the last. I laughed plenty, held my breath, and spilled a few tears.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes a great romance.

This was a good journey story. The story keeps you moving through various situations and obstacles as these two along with an infant attempt to get to safety. I never lost interest as the story progressed. The characters were well described and it was easy to imagine the feel and surroundings. It was unique on top of everything.

Really sweet story. At first, I wasn't sure if I would be able to get into this book but I was pleasantly surprised. I loved the "honesty" (for the most part) of the characters. The ending stretched my imagination a bit, but hey I was at the end so I accepted it.

It has an interesting storyline with potential but some situations leaned more towards assault than romance. Not the most compelling book and the end wasn’t very realistic or satisfying.

Too mushy. I can see some readers liking this story - it's not that it's too poorly written, just too much romance and hardly any suspense. Also, too wordy, and a bit tough to swallow the storyline and characters.
