LSU football reports for fall camp today and the first day of practice starts on Thursday. What position battles will we see play out in the next month?
First and foremost, the obvious: the quarterback competition. Will Brian Kelly and Mike Denbrock go with the LSU veteran who looked calm, cool, and collected in the spring game in Myles Brennan? Or the young-gun slinger, Garrett Nussmeier? Or is it the Arizona State transfer Jayden Daniels that can make plays with his legs better than just about any other QB in the Pac-12 last year?
Second, how will Kelly and Denbrock approach the RB position? LSU veteran John Emery Jr. returns to the field this season after academic ineligibility left him on the sidelines in 2021. But will Penn State transfer Noah Cain give him some competition for the starting job? Or, is it going to be more of a committee approach to the run game, utilizing not just the talent of those two but Armoni Goodwin, Tre Bradford, and Josh Williams as well?
Lastly, five-star Baton Rouge WR Shelton Sampson Jr. will announce his commitment on Saturday at Catholic High School. How important is it to this 2023 class to add another hometown guy in addition to his skill and depth at the WR position?
