Steve's New Neighbors Gilda The Terrible Witch Book 7 - Mark Mulle

    DAY 1:

Do you ever have those moments when you have done something heroic but things still do not seem to want to go your way?

The battle is over, the villain vanquished, the war won, and you are ready to sit back and celebrate your awesome victory only to find out that there is another task, another journey, just waiting to be completed. The battle between good and evil will never be done. There will always be another villain. The hero must always be prepared for another adventure.

What if the hero just wants to sit down and eat cake for three days straight? What is so wrong with that?

I know that I have always said that I wanted to be known as The Great Steve, a hero of our world, and here, in the South Meadow, I am!

But when murmurings begin to pass through the village that there are other towns that might need saving… well, I guess I thought that once you became a hero you were able to live in the glory of your triumph, and the safety of your victory, forever.

Apparently, this is not what it means to be a hero.

Being a hero is HARD WORK.

Always saving people, fighting bad guys, trekking across the world and hoping that you can find your way home.

I am telling you, CAKE. That is what a hero wants. Lots, and LOTS, of cake.

I am getting ahead of myself. I should probably tell you that the reason that I am up in the middle of the night dreaming about cake is because I have a meeting in the morning with the town council.

Yes, our village now has a council.

A council that has been reviewing and voting on the direst situations in need of a hero. They are voting on where to send their hero next.

    Their hero, meaning ME.

Have I mentioned that I am NOT on the council?

I guess that I was invited a few weeks ago, but I was too busy determining which villager bakes the best cake. I did not have time for the council.

So, they went on without me. Deciding my future and where I should go next on my mission to save the Overworld.

Alex and Larry are on the council, but not Steve.

    No. No. No.

So what, maybe I did defeat the most TERRIBLE wither skeleton that ever existed. Maybe I had a moment of heroism.

Maybe I do not want to be a hero anymore.

I don’t want to be a hero! I shouted into the piece of cake that was perched in my left hand. It was pretty foolish because, there was not anyone else around, and it was clear that the cake wanted no part of my conversation. So, I ate it.

A little part of me know that what I had said was not true.

I did want to be a hero. I had enjoyed saving the prisoners and battling the evil skeleton. I would do it again, in an instant, if the village needed it. But, why would I want to travel to some far off place to
