Steve's New Neighbors - Gilda the Terrible Witch Book 9 - Mark Mulle

    DAY 1:

It is Steve again. This morning we returned to the South Meadow. Larry, Benjamin, and I wasted no time informing the village in the Clay Mesa Valley of the urgent situation. Without hesitation, their most knowledgeable cleric agreed to travel with us to the South Meadow to formulate a plan to deal with Gilda the Grand.

I do not say to defeat her because, to be honest, I am not certain that is even possible. The best that we might be able to hope for is to contain her fury.

Gilda the Terrible Witch is a terrifying witch who has been imprisoned in an obsidian chamber for hundreds of years. This prison had been guarded by two endermen in the hope that she would never escape.

    Unfortunately, she has been released.

Bearded Benjamin, a vegetarian miner with a love for yodeling, still feels awful for the role that he played in her escape. No matter how many times Larry and I, and even the Mesa Village cleric, have tried to convince him that he is not to be blamed he still feels incredible guilt.

You see, Benjamin had been under the influence of a powerful potion that had turned him into a sloshing green monster that behaved according to the witch’s desire. She had created the Potion of Plenty as a way to control an unsuspecting minion that would focus on nothing other than helping her return to power. Larry and I had been able to bring the real Benjamin back from the control of the potion, but not before he had already released Gilda the Grand.

The real Benjamin was a peaceful soul who would never have done such a thing. Now, he is determined to help us defeat her. It is the only way, he said, that he will ever be able to forgive himself for the terrible deed of setting her free.

Ben is not a warrior. He is not a fighter, an adventurer, or even very skilled at speaking. Bearded Benjamin is a miner. He is an expert at one thing, and one thing only. Digging. Somehow, I am not certain that this will come in handy when we attempt to confront the most powerful witch who has ever walked in the Overworld.

Before we can begin to deal with Gilda, we need a plan. We needed to return to the South Meadow to speak with the town council, especially Alex, about what should be done. Then, we would have an even larger problem.

    How would we find her?

In an infinite Overworld, a world filled with endless places to hide or cause trouble, how could we locate one troublesome witch?

Tomorrow is the council meeting. Alex and Elysa have traveled to Alex’s old stronghold to collect supplies for the village. The two females, one witch and one adventurer, have grown very close in recent months. Together, they often collect ingredients for Elysa’s potions while exploring the land around the village.

When I think about Elysa, I have a difficult time understanding how Gilda can be such an awful witch. Elysa is kind, smart, and sometimes shy. She
