Overcome Your Shyness. - Santos Omar Medrano Chura

    1. Recognize and accept your shyness.

Shyness is a feeling of discomfort, nervousness or anxiety that we experience when interacting with other people or facing social situations. Shyness can affect our personal and social lives, limiting our opportunities, relationships and well-being.

1.1. What is shyness and how does it manifest itself?

Shyness is a way of reacting to social situations that generate fear or insecurity. Shyness manifests itself in different ways, depending on the person and the context. Some of the most common manifestations of shyness are:

Avoiding or running away from social situations that intimidate us or make us nervous, such as public speaking, meeting new people, expressing our opinions or feelings, etc. This prevents us from taking advantage of the opportunities and benefits of social interaction, and isolates and limits us.

Feeling anxiety, stress or panic when faced with social situations that frighten us or make us uncomfortable, which can cause physical symptoms such as sweating, trembling, palpitations, flushing, dry mouth, etc. This makes it difficult for us to control and regulate our emotions, and negatively affects our health and well-being.

Having negative or irrational thoughts about ourselves, others or the situation, such as believing that we are not good enough, that we are going to fail, that we are going to be rejected, that we are going to be judged, etc. This causes us to have low self-esteem and a lack of confidence, and distorts and distances us from reality.

Showing inadequate or unassertive behaviors in social situations, such as speaking too little or too fast, stuttering, looking at the floor, crossing our arms, not making eye contact, not smiling, not showing interest, etc. This prevents us from communicating and relating effectively and satisfactorily, and makes us appear insecure, bored or unfriendly.

    1.2. What factors influence shyness?

Shyness is a way of reacting to social situations that generate fear or insecurity. Shyness manifests itself in different ways, depending on the person and the context. Some of the most common manifestations of shyness are:

Avoiding or running away from social situations that intimidate us or make us nervous, such as public speaking, meeting new people, expressing our opinions or feelings, etc. This prevents us from taking advantage of the opportunities and benefits of social interaction, and isolates and limits us.

    What factors influence shyness?

Shyness is not a fixed or immutable characteristic of our personality, but is the result of the interaction of several factors that may vary throughout our lives. Some of the factors that influence shyness are:

The genetic factor: Some people may have a biological predisposition to be more sensitive or reactive to social stimuli, which may make them more likely to experience shyness.

The environmental factor: The environment in which we grow and develop can influence our shyness, both positively and negatively. For example, if we receive support, affection and reinforcement from our family, friends and teachers, we may develop greater self-confidence and self-assurance. But if we suffer rejection, criticism or ridicule from others, we may develop greater insecurity and fear of social situations.

The situational factor: Shyness also depends on the context and circumstances in which we find ourselves. Not all social situations generate the same level of shyness, but it depends on factors such as the degree of novelty, difficulty, importance or exposure of the situation. For example, we may feel more shy when talking to a stranger than to a friend, or when giving a presentation than when participating in a conversation.

1.3. What are the benefits of accepting your shyness?

Accepting your shyness has the following benefits:

Reduce your anxiety and stress: By accepting your shyness, you stop seeing it as a problem or a defect, and you stop feeling guilty or ashamed of it. This helps you relax your body and mind, and reduce the physical and psychological symptoms that cause you discomfort or suffering. It also helps you face social situations more calmly and confidently, and enjoy them more.

Increase your self-esteem and self-knowledge: By accepting your shyness, you recognize and value yourself as a unique and special person, with your virtues and your defects, and with your potential and your limitations. This helps you to love and respect yourself more, and to feel more confident and satisfied with yourself. It also helps you to know and understand yourself better, and to identify your emotions and needs.

Improve your motivation and attitude: By accepting your shyness, you focus on your goals and your possibilities, not on your fears or obstacles. This helps you to have a more positive and optimistic attitude, and to believe in your ability and willingness to achieve what you set out to do. It also helps you to adopt a growth and learning mindset, and to see shyness as a challenge and an opportunity, not as a barrier or a threat.

Facilitate your change and self-improvement: By accepting your shyness, you take responsibility and commit to your process of change and self-improvement, and you seek and apply strategies and resources to help you overcome your shyness. This helps you to be more proactive and more persistent, and to make the decisions and take the actions that bring you closer to your goals. It also helps you to be more flexible and more adaptable, and to face and solve problems and difficulties that may arise.

    Suggestion:

Tip 1: Don't be ashamed or blame yourself for being shy.
