Chapter 1 - Overview Of Social Anxiety

It also makes the person feel embarrassed, humiliated, depressed and even inferior. If someone usually goes anxious when it comes to interact with other people but feels well when alone, then it may be the sign of social anxiety.
Also known as Social Phobia
, the social anxiety disorder also causes deep fear of being humiliated by the people. Sometimes, it becomes the fear of embarrassment in social situations. The sufferer may tend to feel that they will mess up while speaking or interacting with public and the people will not measure them up.
In these social situations and due to feared performance, people who have social anxiety may be concerned about being embarrassed and scared that the people will start judging them to be weak, dumb or crazy
. They may not speak because they have fear that people may notice their wobbly voice or hands. They feel that they will look hesitant while conversing with others.
A person who have social anxiety disorder may stop drinking, eating or doing something in public because they are scared of being embarrassed when people notice their hands shaking. They may also feel the symptoms of anxiety like dry mouth, heart tremors, gastrointestinal discomfort, sweating, muscle tension, diarrhea, blushing, shaky voice or even confusion. Even worse, they may feel a complete panic attack.
Social Anxiety May Be Unreasonable Or Excessive
Scared_Child_at_Nighttime.jpgThe symptoms of social anxiety can be the cause of concern where an individual who is suffering from social phobia will fret that the problems they are actually facing may cause embarrassing and unwanted situation. People who have social phobia may either avoid performance or social situations or stuff them with complete stress and anxiety. They may also suffer from preventative fear about the upcoming social situation or event. It may create a cruel situation of anxiety which leads to bad performance, whether perceived or real. For future situation, it causes even more fear.
Most of the sufferers consider their fear as either unreasonable or excessive. They try to avoid any social situation that can cause fear in their life. If they have to face any of these situations, they do it with strong fear.
In the US alone, there are around 5% to 13% of people who experience the fear of being social throughout their life. According to researches, the number of women is higher than men who experience social anxiety. According to several studies, social phobia is most common in teenagers, though it can victimize anyone. According to mental health experts, several people suffer this condition for several years but they seek professional help only when their anxiety goes unbearable. There are certain medications and psychotherapy treatments that can help treat social anxiety disorder.
Types Of Social Anxiety
Some people perceive any social situation as a cause for anxiety and phobia. It means these people are facing generalized social phobia. There are many people for whom only a few situations cause anxiety. They have non-generalized form of social anxiety. According to some researchers, the types of situations which cause anxiety are the factors to find out who is facing which kind of social anxiety.
