Fear is a natural emotion that alerts us to potential threats or dangers. However, when fear becomes excessive, irrational or chronic, it can have negative effects on our health, performance and happiness. Some of these effects are:

How fear affects your health: Fear activates the sympathetic nervous system, which prepares the body for fight or flight. This involves an increase in heart rate, blood pressure, breathing and sweating. If fear is sustained for a long time, it can lead to stress, anxiety, insomnia, fatigue, headaches, digestive problems, weakened immune system and other illnesses.
How fear affects your performance: Fear also affects the functioning of the brain, especially the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for executive functions such as attention, memory, reasoning, decision making and problem solving.
