    Prologue

Author's note: All characters depicted in this work of fiction are 18 years of age or older.

The last thing that Special Agent James Reid heard before two brutal blows landed on the back of his head was, Ya in de wrong turf now, mon . . .

Reid didn't have the chance to turn around and identify his assailant, as darkness quickly enveloped him, pulling him into unconsciousness.

    ---

Some time later, Reid gradually regained consciousness. The throbbing pain in his head served as a harsh reminder of the blows he had endured. He reached his left hand to the back of his head, feeling the raised bumps caused by the blunt object. Flecks of dried blood clung to the oil on his skin.

Fantastic! Just my luck, he muttered quietly.

Reid took a moment to collect himself, his sharp and organized mind compelling him to analyze the situation before moving forward. Step one: review the events that led him to this predicament.

James Reid, Special Agent 191 of the NSA, had devoted 12 years of exemplary service to his country. Along the way, he had accumulated five bullet wounds, three knife scars, numerous concussions, and even survived a poisoning. Such experiences had earned him a rare distinction – he was entrusted with tracking down and apprehending deranged individuals with dreams of world domination. Often, in the pursuit of these mad would-be conquerors, he was forced to resort to lethal force.

While he aimed to avoid taking lives whenever possible, there were instances where he had no choice but to eliminate more than a dozen men. In one particular case, to thwart a powerful organization from overthrowing three governments, he had to wipe out hundreds. The newspapers dubbed it a cult suicide. The only solace he found in his actions was knowing that he was making the world a better place to live.

One major downside to his occupation was that Reid had sacrificed any semblance of a personal life. His unwavering pursuit of truth, justice, and the American way had left no room for romance. It had been years since he had even shared a bed with a woman, and even then, it was a transaction arranged by the target of his mission – a far cry from a meaningful relationship. He had no one in his life and had long accepted this personal sacrifice.

However, despite his efforts to bury them, the hurt, longing, and emptiness in Reid's life remained. Every now and then, his emotions would resurface in the form of sarcasm or anger, giving those who knew him the impression that he was a real-life embodiment of James Bond.

Reid scoffed mentally at the comparison. If only the glamorous lifestyle of a fictional agent were a reality! The life of a spy was far from as appealing as it appeared in books or movies.

This time, Reid's target was Nathaniel Thorn, another power-hungry individual. The specifics of Thorn's methods were not important. What mattered was that Thorn was gathering resources for something dangerous, and Reid had been given straightforward instructions by headquarters: locate Thorn and apprehend him, or eliminate him if necessary. Reid hoped fervently that this mission would be his last in sanctioning such men.

The chase led Reid to Kingston, Jamaica, which he had discovered to be Thorn's stronghold. It made sense, considering Thorn was a British national. Where else would he choose to evade justice but a former British colony? In Reid's opinion, the United States lacked the civilities and niceties he had grown accustomed to.

Ultimately, it didn't matter. Jamaica had an independent extradition treaty with the NSA, and all Reid had to do was capture his target. However, even though the Jamaican government recognized the authority of the NSA, they had made it clear that they would not assist in the operation. They were too afraid of getting involved due to Thorn's influence in their country. Many officials were terrified of him, and those who weren't considered themselves fortunate to have never crossed paths with Thorn.

In essence, Reid was on his own, deep within enemy territory where many of the individuals who could have aided him were either corrupt or terrified. It was a daunting task.

An unexpected breakthrough came just after Reid checked into his hotel. The desk clerk handed him a note, which turned out to be from Blake.

Martin Blake, Thorn's right-hand man and chief enforcer, was a large, intimidating black man with scars from his time in the American military before going rogue several years ago. Rumor had it that Blake and Thorn had fallen out. This meeting could be Blake's way of regaining favor with his own government.

It seemed logical that Blake would seize this opportunity. He and Reid had been partners in a highly intense mission involving multiple departments about twelve years ago. They had relied on each other repeatedly for their survival. During that mission, Reid had even saved Blake's life. Perhaps the trust they had formed back then still existed. And if Thorn were to discover the note, Blake would be forced to trust Reid with his life once again.

    The message was clear:

    James:

10:30 tonight. Tiki-Bar. We need to talk I'm ready to come back

    Martin

Reid recognized Blake's unmistakable handwriting. And so, he found himself in the dimly lit Tiki-Bar, eyes fixed on Blake who was staring right back at him. But before he could process the situation, he was blindsided with a heavy blow to the back of his head. The betrayal cut deep - another reminder of the inherent distrust that came with his line of work.

Yet, Reid understood the importance of gaining critical information, even if it meant risking his life. Without Blake's insights, he would have to navigate the treacherous path ahead with limited knowledge. Assuming he even survived whatever plan Blake and Nathaniel Thorn had concocted.

Slowly, Reid opened his eyes, his mental inventory complete. Now, it was time to assess his current predicament. As he sat up too quickly, the pain from his head wound tore through him. Taking in his surroundings, he
