    Vegas is a magical town.

Unfortunately, I wasn't seeing it at its best. I was in town for a convention, nothing amazing, and I didn't know anyone there. There are all kinds of things to do there but by that third day I was about ready to just call it off and head home. I left the convention early that day, complaining of stomach problems when the leader of my group asked if I was going to be joining everyone for dinner. We’d all been assigned to groups on the first day, probably in an effort to force us to socialize, and mine wasn’t the best.

Television was crap and I hadn't brought a book along, so I wound up drifting down to one of the hotel bars in the afternoon. It wasn't one of the big hotels on the strip, so the bar was almost empty when I got there. A bored bartender gave me a beer and I sat watching the same crap television available in my room. About an hour into the game I was ready to go, but just as I stood the bartender slid a dark drink in front of me. From the lady, he said, nodding at someone in the corner.

I turned and looked in that direction and saw that someone was sitting at the bar after all. She’d managed to sneak in while my attention was on the game and I was shocked that I’d ever overlooked her. Tall and brunette, she was wearing a dress that I envied for the way that it got to hug every curve. She had lots of curves, too, with heavy breasts and wide hips tapering into long legs. Her face was more interesting than beautiful, her lips just a shade under being too full. She curved those lips in a smile and raised her glass to me.

If I had been reading a story based off this moment, she would have been sultry and dangerous, full of confidence in her appearance and the way it drew eyes. Instead she was just a little awkward in her movements, as if she wasn’t sure how long her arms were. She was smiling with a mixture of confidence, curiosity, and uncertainty that made me get up and go over to her.

Um, hi, I said, my name’s Jacob.

Hi, Jacob. I’m…I’m Erica. Her voice was amazing, low and smoky like some of the best lounge singers. Please, ah, have a seat.

She spoke with that same combination of confidence and insecurity that had caught my attention in her smile. Her dress wasn’t revealing enough to scream Prostitute! so I decided to sit and chat. Nothing else to do.

Nice to meet you, Erica. What are you doing here in Vegas tonight?

Actually, I’m here for a convention. I’m in sales.

No kidding, me too. And if you don’t mind the compliment, I bet you do a great job.

She smiled and looked down, a faint blush coloring high cheekbones. She swished her drink around a bit and then finished it off. I do all right. Never going to be top of the line, but it’s a living.

We chatted about our jobs, moving on to the weather and the way that Vegas was different from our hometowns. It was amazing how much we had in common when she wasn’t vague about details. Over
