Author's note: All characters depicted in this work of fiction are 18 years of age or older.

As I woke up and opened my eyes, I surveyed the surroundings of the room. It was clearly a woman's room, filled with feminine belongings that were unfamiliar to me. Even after all this time, it still felt a bit strange waking up in this space.

This was my girlfriend's flat, and as someone who cherished personal space, it took some getting used to. I turned over, wrapped my arm around her, and she nestled closer to me. In that moment, personal space was the furthest thing from my mind.

These quiet mornings were the essence of what relationships are all about. Those moments when there are no desires or needs, just two people sharing their presence. If only every day could be like this.

I dozed off for a while, content to simply lie there with Trish. We had been together for about a year, and things were going quite well. Being in our late twenties, we had both come to terms with the fact that we would never find the perfect partner. So when we met and discovered there was something between us, we were perfectly content with just that.

Time passed as I drifted in and out of sleep, until eventually Trish rolled over and planted a kiss on my lips.

Opening my eyes, her face came into focus. Hi handsome, she said with a smile. That smile was my favorite thing about her. Trish looked at me and gently placed a hand on my arm. So, what do you have planned for me today?

Today was her 30th birthday, and I had put a lot of effort into finding her a truly special gift. Well, more than one gift (I may not be a fool, but I know better than to settle for just one). I wanted to find something truly unique, something that no one else would think of.

Trish was a popular girl and nothing like my previous girlfriends. She possessed wit, humor, and a genuine coolness. In fact, she was much cooler than me.

To be honest, I was a bit of a mess. I often drank too much, spent money on the wrong things, and managed to create chaos in my life. But the one thing I got right from the beginning was my relationship with her.

Sure, she wasn't my ideal woman: she had a slender figure that some of my friends thought could use a few extra meals, and her small breasts didn't appeal to my family's taste. They considered her to be a bit odd.

She stood at around five feet ten, just a little shorter than my own towering six feet. I couldn't help but appreciate her long, naturally wavy sandy hair, along with her adorable face. And hey, I wasn't too shabby either, if I do say so myself. Sure, maybe a few extra pounds to shed, but far from being overweight.

But you know what? None of that mattered to me. Here I was, lying next to a woman who made me feel significant, who made me feel like I wasn't a complete idiot.

I flashed her a grin. Remind me, what's today again?

She playfully slapped me. Don't even try, mister!

Oh, come on! Give me something more than 'it's Saturday', I pleaded.

Trish narrowed her eyes at me suspiciously. If you're trying to--

Before she could finish her sentence, I burst into laughter, prompting another slap. Alright, alright, you got me.

I seized her, rolled on top of her, and kissed her passionately, my tongue intertwining with hers. Well, the first thing I thought was I'd give you this… Another kiss, followed by a gentle cupping of her breast, as my lips gradually made their way south...

    ---

After we freshened up and grabbed some breakfast, I convinced her to relax in the living room while I fetched her things.

I made my way down to the car, retrieved my bag from the trunk, and ascended the stairs to her apartment.

As I entered, I saw her still seated in the same spot with a mischievous grin adorning her face. Her excitement was palpable, and I couldn't help but reciprocate the smile.

Here we are, birthday girl, I announced, taking a seat in front of her. She could barely contain her anticipation...

Opening my bag, I produced a few small wrapped gifts. Just some token gestures to begin with: a bottle of her beloved perfume, a new pair of earrings, a birthday card enclosing a voucher for a health spa, bath salts, and a new makeup compact. She tore through the wrappings with the enthusiasm of a child.

Her happiness was evident as she examined each gift, and upon finishing, she hugged me tightly and expressed, Oh Marty, you really shouldn't have gone through all this trouble.

I leaned in and kissed her. I'm not done yet, there's one more thing.

Revealing the last gift, my prized possession, I had stumbled across it three months ago in a thrift store. Seeing it on display, I instantly knew it was the perfect present for a certain 30-year-old woman...

She took the gift from my hands, her curious gaze fixed upon me. What is it?

    Open it and discover.

Trish gingerly removed the wrapping, unsure of what to expect. It was rare for me to truly surprise her, so when she finally unveiled the contents, her reaction was priceless. Clutched within her hands was a large, weathered, leather-bound book. The brown leather exhibited signs of wear, a testimony to its previous use. The book bore no name or title, but its appearance seemed to align perfectly with her tastes.

You see, my girlfriend had a strong fascination with the occult and mysticism. She attended seminars on spiritualism and Wicca, and it intrigued her immensely. While I couldn't fully grasp it myself, I made an effort to show some interest.

In any relationship, there's a balance of compromises. I took her to see action-packed movies, where explosions occurred every few minutes, even though she grew bored after the initial excitement. In return, she shared stories of ancient witches, warlocks, and sorcerers, while I did my best to stifle any signs of indifference.

The book sat enticingly in the shop window, resembling what I imagined a
