    Prologue

Author's note: All characters depicted in this work of fiction are 18 years of age or older.

Arriving at his house in the early evening, she followed through with her plan to finish work early, pack up her belongings, and drive her small Jetta to his place. The drive to his new home was delightful, a large four-bedroom house situated by the beach on the pricey Shelter Island in Point Loma. Their residences were worlds apart - she had lived in a cramped two-bedroom apartment for two years, barely within her budget.

From the window, he caught sight of Jessica sitting motionless in her car. Parking in the driveway with the engine off, she seemed uncertain about what to do next. He knew she was nervous, but he too had his own anxieties.

Having recently arrived in town as the head of a small investment company, he was slated to be around for only six months. Founded by him and some former Navy colleagues, the company had grown enough to take on a significant project - the construction of a retirement community in Carlsbad. Mark's presence was necessary to oversee the venture from conception to groundbreaking. Although this wasn't his usual role, upon discovering that Jessica was working as the mayor's political advisor in the city, he requested the assignment. The partners approved the request, and everything was arranged accordingly.

Now, he stood in his second-floor office, surreptitiously observing the scene outside. Dressed only in black gym shorts, he had discarded his t-shirt hours ago while building patio furniture in the backyard. Settling in southern California had inspired him to adopt the laid-back lifestyle he associated with the region.

Remaining in her car, Jessica noticed her palms growing sweaty. Up until she parked in his driveway, it all felt like a distant fantasy - just the notion of a man and a woman having a conversation. She never truly believed anything more could come of it.

Then, seemingly out of nowhere, he called her. He informed her of his upcoming visit, explaining that the company would arrange for a beachfront house and offering her a chance to be his roommate. She needed less than a minute to consider the proposition. Her demanding work schedule made it challenging to form new relationships, be they friendships or more. She longed for attention.

Despite living in the city for over two years, she had struggled to forge new connections. The election of a democratic mayor in a town leaning towards republicanism had taken a toll on her. Surviving the past year on minimal sleep - less than four hours a night - had paid off, with her efforts resulting in the underdog mayor's victory by 24 points.

However, there was a price to pay. She was exhausted and devoid of a social life. She yearned for emotional support, a friend consistently in her corner. Someone whose stability could offer her assistance. Mark was that person, a trusted friend who had always made time for her calls, offering advice and kind messages during rough times.

What struck her as particularly peculiar was that even her mom approved of him. It was a rarity for a black family to support their daughter's relationship with a white man, let alone someone a decade older than her. Her dad, a staunch activist for black rights, was not a fan, though to be fair, it was rare for him to like anyone.

They used to live in St. Augustine, Florida, before their paths diverged. Jessica had invited him to a family Christmas party, even though he was reluctant to go. However, he couldn't refuse her. And within a matter of hours, he had won over most of her family.

Mark was not only attractive but also possessed a great sense of humor and boundless energy. Her mom believed he was the type of person who would always ensure their daughter's happiness. Her father tolerated him because Mark was well-informed about current events, and despite their disagreements on various social issues, he respected Mark's ability to engage in factual debates. Jessica even told Mark that her father had never respected a white guy before him.

Mark emerged from the front door, his chest bare. Jessica couldn't help but be drawn to his perfectly sculpted physique. They had gone to the gym together in the past, so she had seen him shirtless, but this time felt different. The conversation had been laced with sexual tension, and now she knew for certain that he desired her. And she reciprocated that desire.

His loosely fitting shorts hung low on his hips, revealing a glimpse of the waistband of his boxers. It was just enough to ignite her desires. He managed to look sexy without appearing trashy, a skill not many men possessed. The key was to make the boxers subtly visible. She didn't even know the color of his underwear, only the elastic band, and that was enough to captivate her.

Noticing her biting her lower lip as he approached the car, Mark couldn't help but reflect on how often he had seen her engage in that habit during their recent video chats. He knew exactly what it meant, even if she wasn't consciously aware of it herself.

Opening the car door for her, Jessica eagerly stepped out. Her long white sundress and flip-flops were perfect for the warm and breezy evening. Mark loved how the light color complemented her toned ebony skin. Her long, straight hair flowed freely down her back.

And then, he glimpsed her cleavage. Though she wore a bra, her ample breasts still provided him with a delicious view. He couldn't quite determine if she intended to showcase herself like this or if it was unintentional.

Taking in his tanned body, Jessica barely had a chance to process it before he raised his arms and enveloped her in a tight hug. Instantly, she fell in love with the warmth and strength of
