    Prologue

Author's note: All characters depicted in this work of fiction are 18 years of age or older.

Being a writer may not bring in much money, and it often requires sacrifices. You let go of material possessions, envy of others' lives, and sometimes even connections with family. But there are compensations. Although your life might not be as broad as others', it's undoubtedly deeper and occasionally more captivating. Constantly seeking to explain and express things to yourself means you notice things that others overlook and experience emotions that most people are too preoccupied to acknowledge.

I can attest to this because during the events of this tale, I resided in an unconverted loft situated in a dodgy neighborhood, right next to the L tracks. The proximity was so close that I could stand by my window in my underwear and establish eye contact with the commuters traveling to and from work, realizing that their gazes lacked depth. At the time, I primarily wrote pornographic content, and although I was aware they read it, their eyes gave no indication.

To make ends meet, I also taught a poetry survey course at Hoxfield Community College. It was in the midst of summer, with a small class of about 20 students in a peculiar miniature lecture hall. Six weeks were crammed with a semester's worth of material, and I was only there as temporary assistance—an adjunct instructor—since none of the actual faculty desired to spend their summers on students who simply sought to breeze through a survey course. Jennifer, a woman in her mid-twenties who had returned to college, was among my students. She had abandoned her regular four-year college before graduating for reasons unknown, pursued something else for a few years, and ultimately changed her mind, now juggling an office job during the day and night courses to complete her degree.

I had a fondness for returning students. They knew the purpose behind their pursuit of higher education, taking it seriously. Having spent time in the real world, they entered the classroom with genuine inquiries, still possessing a glimmer of naiveté, believing they would obtain real answers.

Nonetheless, I never expected to form a connection with Jennifer. She seemed a tad too self-absorbed, excessively attractive and fashionable to possess any intellectual ambitions. Her radiant tan didn't instill an abundance of confidence regarding her dedication to academics. She was tall with an alluring figure—long brown hair, brown eyes—and always dressed impeccably. She took care of herself. She appeared to be a woman whose primary focus involved men, someone who knew her own worth and held herself in high regard. I envisioned her future as that of a suburban normality—marrying an upper middle-management husband within a year or two, having two kids, residing in a
