    PROJECT NOTES

Read all instructions before beginning this project.

Stitch right sides together using a ¼″ seam allowance unless otherwise specified.

Materials and cutting lists assume 40″ of usable fabric width for yardage.

Arrows indicate directions to press seams.

    WOF – width of fabric

    HST – half-square triangle

    QST – quarter-square triangle

    CUTTING

    From each fat quarter cut:

•4 (6″) F squares, then cut once diagonally

    •1 (5″) C square

    •2 (1¼″ × 12″) A strips

    From fat quarter leftovers cut:

    •5 orange (2½″ × 6½″) N rectangles

    •4 yellow (2½″ × 6½″) N rectangles

    •4 orange (2½″ × 3½″) O rectangles

    •4 yellow (2½″) P squares

    From white tonal cut:

    •4 (6″) J squares

    •8 (5″) D squares

    •16 (2½″ × 12½″) L rectangles

    •16 (2½″ × 8½″) K rectangles

    •7 (2½″ × WOF) binding strips

COMPLETING THE BLOCKS & BORDER STRIPS

    1. Join one each of the A and B strips to make a strip set. Make two strip sets. From the strip sets, cut eight (2½″) A-B units.

    Figure 1

    2. Refer to Eight-at-a-Time Half-Square Triangles and use a C square and a D square to make eight C-D units (Figure 2). Trim all C-D units to 2″ square.

    Figure 2

    3. Arrange four matching C-D units, four matching A-B units and one E square in three rows (Figure 3). Sew into rows and join the rows to complete a churn dash unit. Repeat steps 1–3 to make 16 total churn dash units.

    Figure 3

    4. Sew contrasting F triangles to opposite sides of a churn dash unit (Figure 4). Trim triangles even with the churn dash unit and then sew matching F triangles to the remaining sides to complete a square-in-a-square unit. Trim the unit to 8½″ square (this will be approximately ¾″ outside the outer seam intersections). Make 16 square-in-a-square units.
