Blake turned toward the mirror in the salon, checking his hair while he waited for his next client. He glanced at the clock on the wall and sighed quietly as the minute hand made it halfway around. He'd been in the salon since nine o'clock that morning, and had only one client left to go before closing time. The salon was a tiny one-room shop with just enough room for three stations—old chairs set up in front of an old vanity table and a sink. There were mirrors lining the walls, giving him a good view of the entire area. A small counter ran along the back wall, where Blake kept his tools, supplies, and a few magazines to keep himself entertained.

His last appointment arrived, a man who needed a trim and a few highlights. His name was Aiden, a regular client. He was a muscular guy, tall and well built with natural dark hair that he liked to keep short and neat.

Blake knew he booked the last available appointment of the day on purpose. He and Blake got along really well, so they often hung out after their appointments and talked about all sorts of things. They both loved music and had similar tastes in movies, so their conversations never lacked for something interesting to talk about.

Blake often wondered if Aiden was interested in him. He'd always felt a connection between them, but Blake hadn't had the courage to act on his feelings. Not yet.

You wanna meet up at Jimmy's when you're done here? Aiden asked. Jimmy's was a bar down the street. Blake liked to stop by there sometimes on his way home from work. It was one of the only places nearby that served good food.

Sure. I'll be there as soon as I'm done closing up, Blake told him.

Aiden grinned. Cool.

Aiden left, leaving Blake alone again. He took care of the business end of things, cleaning up and disinfecting the tools he used, then putting everything back in its place. When he finished, he locked the door behind him and headed over to Jimmy's.
