SABRINA WALKED UP THE stairs to her apartment, a duffel bag slung over one shoulder. She had just come from work and was in a hurry, but she still stopped for a moment at the top of the stairs. Her apartment was on the fifth floor of an old tenement building—the kind that looked like it might collapse if you sneezed. But it also had its charms: wood floors, high ceilings with exposed beams, and windows on all sides that let in plenty of natural light. It was Sabrina's sanctuary after a long day at the office or a tough workout at the gym. She enjoyed stopping to take it all in from time to time.

She slipped through the door into her living room. A small kitchenette sat off to the right, and beyond that was a wide open space filled with comfortable furniture and other amenities. Above the sofa hung several framed photos of Sabrina and her sister growing up, as well as pictures of her and her friends. Sabrina paused, looking at a photo of her with her friend Leon. They were both smiling broadly, standing together in front of their college graduation ceremony. The two hadn't been close since they graduated—Leon went on to get his doctorate and become a professor at MIT while Sabrina worked as a software engineer for an advertising agency—but she remembered him fondly. She wondered what he was up to these days. She pulled out her phone, opening the address book app and typing Leon's name. As she waited for the call to connect, she sat down on the couch and stretched her legs out. She took a deep breath and exhaled slowly, enjoying the feeling of relaxation.

Hello?

Sabrina smiled at the familiar voice on the other end of the line. Hey, Leon.

Hi there! Leon sounded genuinely happy to hear from her.
