    About the author

    First Course—Appetizers

Having the first of January as my birthday was always a mixed blessing. I try to enjoy the good aspects of it as much as possible, and not to let the downsides bother me too much. My parents were always away skiing during the two weeks around New Year, so I usually had to find something else—or someone—to keep myself busy and celebrate this special event.

Every year since I lost my virginity on my birthday, this day has revolved around sex. Commemorating my first time, I created fresh memories of a sexual encounter to last me a lifetime, or at least well into a new year.

Last year this adventure began the night before, on New Year's Eve. Or better Old Year's Eve—Oudjaar as we say in Flemish. I had accepted an invitation from one of my girlfriends. She had invited me over to spend the evening and the turn of the year—and of course my birthday—celebrating with her and her boyfriend. It would last until well into the next day.

I had known this girl, Sabine, for several months already. She's very sweet and outgoing, and very sexy. We hung out a lot, shopping and going out on occasion. We had already slept together a few times while her boyfriend was away on business. She wasn't out of the closet yet as bisexual, so he had no clue she was into girls. The setup of the evening, and of me coming over, would be...to break the news to him. We'd been talking about it in advance, discussing how we would go about telling him. I suggested that the best way would be to drag him into a ménage-à-trois. What man could say no to a threesome with two hot ladies? And what man would mind his woman going at it with another woman, as long as he was allowed to join in? Bonus for me, of course, would be self-evident. I love couples, and when one of the two in the couple was Sabine, it could only be a treat.

For weeks I had been looking forward to this evening. I immensely enjoyed making love to Sabine, more than with anyone else I was seeing in that period. I had been her first woman, and as far as I knew, I was still the only one. But she loved her boyfriend to death, and their sex-life had always been near perfect.

Near perfect, because she felt attracted to women. Ever since the very sour break-up of a previous relationship, she'd started feeling attracted to other girls—emotionally as well as physically. A very close friend—an attractive, older lesbian—had been there to comfort her while she was trying to glue her shattered life back together. She never expressed interest or tried to seduce Sabine, probably because she felt she would be taking advantage of her vulnerable position. Nonetheless, Sabine had felt drawn to her friend but didn't feel quite confident enough to pursue a romance herself. So nothing happened.

She told me all this during our first night together, in between bursts of lovemaking. Not that she needed to explain any of it to me. I had been in the same situation myself, sort of. Falling in love with another person is not something you choose, be it man or woman. Emotional attraction, and by extension physical desire, is something that happens to you if you let it. I’ve had a very liberal upbringing. Sex has never been much of a taboo for me growing up and in my exploratory years. So sexual orientation—gay, straight, bi—has always been a very blurry line for me.

It wasn’t that self-evident for Sabine though. Yet after her break-up, and
