    CHAPTER 1

James paced slowly in front of the courthouse. Ellen told him that it wouldn’t take long. It was early enough in the day that the bureaucrats wouldn’t be too busy. You’ve waited this long, she had said before going inside. What’s another hour?

He looked toward the front doors and saw them open. Out came Ellen, looking more beautiful than ever. Her brown hair splashing over her shoulders, a twinkle in her eye. She came down the steps and, without hesitation, kissed James passionately as he embraced her. A slight breeze blew past them, briefly catching her locks and making them dance in the air.

Until one day, Ellen said, I want to meet you in person.

They met for coffee at a little neighborhood cafe. Their hearts raced when they saw each other in the flesh for the first time. Ellen was the first to offer a hug and kissed him on the cheek. James accepted this gesture gladly.

It was during that first real life conversation that they revealed more about themselves than they ever had through instant messages, texts or even their phone calls. Sure, they had covered the more torrid topics like sex and a few fantasies. They even engaged in what they euphemistically called playtime about once a week—online sexual roleplaying. Something James had a knack for, which he credited to his work as a writer.
