a special note
Early one morning, when I was about three-quarters of the way from finishing the book, I found this note stuck to the shelf above my writing desk.
This is a preprinting testimony. Neither my son nor I had any idea this simple note would end up in here. It has been my experience when a son takes the time to tell his dad he thinks he is up to something good, he means it and it is usually true!
This book is dedicated to Buddy and Katie Heath, my mom and dad. In looking back at my time with them, I have never been able to figure out how their discipline code worked, but it did. They must have learned it from a book that was out of print and they had the world’s only copy. In rearing my two boys, I often thought, How did they parent me with such grace?
dedication
They were a team with a bond that could not be broken. I tried many times but lost. I once broke the number one rule by asking Mom and not getting the right answer; then I asked Dad. The team caught me and the price was high. Another lesson learned the hard way.
The team spokesman was Dad. All three of us were aware of the fact that sometimes I could manipulate Mom but not Dad. He always stood on solid ground. I refer to Dad several times in the book but make no mistake about it. Mom had her share in what he spoke.
My parents gave me more than I ever deserved. In looking back, it is easy to say it was a privilege to have parents like mine.
In the book, there are several stories and examples I learned from them. It is my hope that you will enjoy and learn as well.
Tip: If your parents are still living, make sure you take the time to treat them with respect and let them know how much you appreciate them. I was fortunate to have my parents live past my fifties. In the end, treating them with respect was one of the best things I ever did for them and myself.
Nothing happens without a little encouragement. These are my top eight encouragers: Rick Beacham, Bruce Carswell, Matt Couglin, Paige Harrell, John Hobbs, Margaret Neal, Jamie Smith, and Rob Swain. Encouraging others is important. You all did a great job. Thanks for your support.
This book would not exist if not for the help of the four people listed below. Yes, I wrote this book, but they put it together and made it work.
I will begin with my grandson, Tristin Heath. He is fourteen and a wizard with computers. When I could not get it to work, he was always there to get me out of trouble. He also helped with my website. Thanks for all your help, T-man!
Bob Furr is a good friend of mine. He is a very talented graphic artist and musician. He has a gift with words, art, and creativity. Our work on this project began about two years ago. He has worked tirelessly to put over 250 Life Points
into production, designed my logo, and now designed and produced this book. He has also given me tons of priceless advice on what is good and what is not. His faithfulness, persistence, and patience with this project have been impressive. I am lucky to have a friend like Bob.
Acknowledgments
Linda Kimble is a Language Arts teacher and editor of this book. There are two things I can tell you about her that will let you know what kind of person she is. First, she is the teacher her students come back to and say, You were the teacher that made the big difference in my life.
Secondly, a few years ago Linda had some health issues with cancer.
She recently shared with me how scared she was when she was not sure what was going to happen and she was worried the most. What she did spoke clearly to me of her strength. She took the time to meticulously write I will not be afraid
365 times. Linda has courage, quality, and class woven all through her being. Anyone who has met her knows this is true. Thank you, Linda, for being so helpful and patient with me.
P.S. Linda is now cancer free!
Pat Heath is my wife of forty-three years. She describes our marriage: It’s been one wild ride. At least you can’t say it hasn’t been exciting.
Pat has been my encourager and displayed tons of patience. I hate to think how many times she has typed this manuscript. It is not because she didn’t know what she was doing; it was because I didn’t know what I was doing. She never lost it. She stayed the course and encouraged me the entire way. I love her even more for that.
I don’t know you other than to know if you picked up or were given this book and you are reading this note, you could be looking for a way to make some improvements in the way you think or the way your life works for you.
In reading it, you will learn a few things about me, some personal experiences and a few good stories you might be able to relate to in your life; but, there are two things I want you to know about me and keep foremost in your mind when reading this book. First, my talent and goal in life is not to be a writer. This will become apparent as you read, but please, don’t hold that against me. Secondly, this book came into being with lots of pain and struggle. I experienced all of this first hand but there was a reason behind all of this madness. I knew I had something to say and I felt compelled to put it on paper.
I wrote this book for you. The principles and concepts presented in What Are You Thinking? have been tested and used by many and proven true by all that chose to use, including me. Simply put, they work when you use them or things get worse when you don’t. The best part is it is all your choice. All the work has been done for you and all you have to do is choose. The good news is when you make the right choice you are the primary beneficiary of your choice.
In reading this, remember: Absolutely nothing here can hurt you, but what is in here can produce valuable benefits for you.
Relax and enjoy!
Chuck
