The Ultimate Glucose Revolution - Kevin K. Milton

    CHAPTER 1

What is Blood Sugar or Glucose?

Blood sugar, or glucose, is the primary sugar present in your blood. It originates from the food you consume; it is your body's primary energy source. Your blood transports glucose to all of your body's cells to consume for energy.

Diabetes is an illness in which your blood sugar levels are excessively high. Over time, having too much glucose in your blood might create significant complications. Even if you don't have diabetes, occasionally, you may have difficulties with blood sugar that is too low or too high. Keeping a routine of eating, exercising, and taking any required medications will assist.

If you have diabetes, it is crucial to maintain your blood sugar values in your goal range. You may need to monitor your blood sugar multiple times each day. Your health care physician will also conduct a blood test called an A1C. It measures your average blood sugar level over the last three months. If your blood sugar is excessively high, you may need to take drugs and follow a specific diet.

    ––––––––

You may know glucose by another name: blood sugar. Glucose is vital to maintaining the body's processes in good operating conditions. When our glucose levels are ideal, it typically passes undetected. But when they deviate beyond advised bounds, you'll notice its negative influence on regular functioning.

So what is glucose, exactly? It's the simplest of carbohydrates, making it a monosaccharide. This signifies it contains one sugar. It's not alone. Other monosaccharides include fructose, galactose, and ribose.

Along with fat, glucose is one of the body's primary fuel sources in the form of carbs. People receive the glucose through bread, fruits, vegetables, and dairy products. You need food to provide the energy that helps keep you alive.

While glucose is vital, as, with so many things, it's best in moderation, glucose levels that are abnormal or out of control might have lasting and catastrophic implications.

How does the body process glucose?

Our body processes glucose numerous times a day, ideally.

When we eat, our body instantly begins trying to digest glucose. Enzymes initiate the breakdown process with support from the pancreas. The pancreas, which produces hormones like insulin, is crucial to how our body deals with glucose. When we eat, our body tips the pancreas off that it needs to produce insulin to cope with the growing blood sugar level.

Some individuals, though, can't depend on their pancreas to leap in and perform the intended task.

One-way diabetes happens when the pancreas doesn't create insulin as it should. In this instance, patients require outside intervention (insulin injections) to digest and control glucose in the body. Another cause of diabetes is insulin resistance when the liver doesn't detect insulin in the body and continues to create improper quantities of glucose. The liver is a crucial organ for sugar regulation since it assists with glucose storage and manufactures glucose when required.

    ––––––––

If the body doesn't create enough insulin, it might release free fatty acids from fat storage. This may lead to a condition called ketoacidosis. Ketones, waste chemicals formed when the liver breaks down fat, may be harmful in excessive amounts.

How do you test your Glucose?

Testing glucose levels is very crucial for those with diabetes. Most persons with the illness are accustomed to dealing with blood sugar tests as part of their everyday routine.

A reasonably basic blood test is one of the most frequent techniques to test glucose at home. A finger prick, generally using a little needle called a lancet, generates a drop deposited onto a test strip. The strip is inserted
