    Crush - Sherron Elise

    Chapter One

When I walked into my first-period math class, I had to keep my eyes from narrowing in annoyance when I spotted a person in my usual seat. But my annoyance soon turned into curiosity as I took in the cuteness of the boy in my seat. He was obviously new, so I forced my feet to move forward, and as I approached, the boy gave me a nod hello. I gave a shy smile and decided to introduce myself.

Hi. I’m Ahmani, I said, deciding to not say anything about him stealing my seat. I just sat in the empty desk directly beside him.

    What’s up? I’m Jayden.

What school did you transfer from?

I was at this charter school called Carver, but it was boring. No kind of sports or anything to get involved in and too many rules. I begged my mom to put me in a public school, so here I am.

Before I could respond, the bell rang, signaling the start of class, but I could barely concentrate. It was math class, which is my worst subject anyway, but having Jayden sitting so close caused my focus to be even more off. A couple of my friends had called themselves trying to have boyfriends, and I thought they were crazy, but now that I’d laid eyes on Jayden, I definitely wouldn’t mind ending up as his girlfriend. I couldn’t wait to catch up with my friends at lunch and tell them all about him.

My best friends were Kacee Howard, Londyn Parker, and Cierra Douglas. We called ourselves the Slumber Sisters because we had sleepovers at each other’s home every second and fourth Saturday of each month. The sleepovers started with me and Kacee and then Londyn came along. Cierra completed our foursome. Our theme scripture was Matthew 18:20, for where two or three are gathered together in my name, I am there among them. God was definitely with us as we went through some crazy times together.

There he is, I said, during lunch as I sat with my friends in the cafeteria, pointing out Jayden to them as he entered. His name is—

Jayden, Cierra said before getting up and running across the cafeteria to him. We all watched as she and Jayden exchanged a hug.

"Ooh, you’re right Ahmani. He is cute," Kacee said, but I barely heard her as I watched Cierra and Jayden talk and laugh.

How did she know him? Did they also share a class together?

When Cierra finally came back to the table, my eyes bored into her, demanding answers.

Jayden’s mother was the director for the foster home I used to stay in. He’d come to work with her sometimes and play with me and the other foster kids. I haven’t seen him since I left foster care, but I used to have a big crush on him. Almost all of the other girls in the foster home did. Doesn’t he look like Tariq St. Patrick?

    Who? London asked.

"From that show Power, Cierra added. Oh, I forgot. Your parents don’t allow you to watch shows with cursing and violence. Jade and D’Ashley let me watch it with them sometimes when they stay over for the weekend."

    Jade and D’Ashley are Cierra’s half-sisters. They’re fraternal twins.

Well, Cierra, just remember, I spotted him first, I said, playfully shaking my fist at her.

But Cici has been knowing him for much longer, Kacee pointed out.

He’s always treated me like a sister though. Honestly, I don’t think his mom would approve of him talking to me or any of the other foster kids. I’ve always felt like she believed Jayden was too good for us.

"She probably felt like that then, but it’s not like you’re
