Watching my six-year-old son, Guy, run around the florist excitedly, unsure which bright flower to pick out, I couldn’t help but laugh.

Guy has always been a confident, crazy kid who loves meeting new people.

So, part of me wasn’t surprised when he came home from school and told me about his new friend, Verity.

‘Mum, I’ve got a girlfriend, can she come over for tea?’ he asked enthusiastically one evening after school. ‘You and Dad have to sit in a different room though!’

Well, that’s strange, I thought.
