This entire book series is dedicated to my childhood friends Christina Steel, Yolanda Carter-Ames, Alena Cook-Fields and Jennifer Washington. I will forever cherish us growing up together on Castleview Lane in the Briargate subdivision of Missouri City, Texas. We played Nintendo and all of the latest board games, and spent so many evenings and weekends outside riding our bicycles, roller skating or having sleepovers. "Fur what?"

"Furloughed, my twelve-year-old cousin Lamaya said in that tone of voice she uses when she feels like she knows something important. It means your mama was laid off from her job."

I was just about to raise another slice of cheese pizza to my mouth, but what she said caused me to stop with the pizza in mid-air like someone had suddenly pressed pause.
