Three’s Company

Coffee time. A half hour first thing every morning for my wife, Stephanie, and me to connect. We’d started this little ritual in the fall, when our daughter left for college, and now, in January, it had become my favorite part of the day.

Doing our morning devotionals as a couple set the tone for the day. It had blossomed into more together time—cooking healthy meals, working out in a spare bedroom we’d turned into a home gym, cuddling on the couch in front of the TV, date nights. Being empty nesters was awesome! For the first time in our 19-year marriage, I had my wife to myself. I loved that we were able to focus on each other.

This morning, we read a devotional that Stephanie had selected about the importance of sacrifice and caring for others. At the end, we held hands and bowed our heads. “Lord, thank you for all the blessings you’ve given us,” Stephanie prayed. “Help us care
