    Differences - Sherron Elise

    Chapter One

Kacee, are you done cleaning your room? The girls should be arriving any minute, my mom called from the kitchen where I was sure she was arranging the snacks and food for my sleepover.

Yes, Mama. I was so excited and couldn’t wait for my friends to see the surprise I had for them tonight.

Ahmani Stewart, Londyn Parker, and I had been having sleepovers at each other’s homes since we were in the first grade. Our other good friend, Cierra Douglas, joined in on our sleepovers when she transferred to our school in the fourth grade. We got off to a pretty rough start with Cierra because she was somewhat of a bully. It’s so crazy though because now Cierra will become my stepsister when her dad marries my mom this August.

What’s even crazier is what led to our parents’ relationship getting started. Last summer, right before I started sixth grade, my mom lost her job. I convinced my friends to go on a spiritual fast with me so God could bless her to get her job back. It was the longest five days of our lives because we could only eat healthy foods. When my mom’s car ended up breaking down, Cierra’s dad, Mr. Marcus, helped out by getting my mom a good deal on repairs, and they’ve been together ever since.

I honestly believe that fast is what got us through some more crazy times we faced last year. Like when we went joyriding with some boys on Halloween and ended up getting into a bad car accident. Cierra then went through some drama with her two half-sisters. I’m glad they called a truce because they’ll become my stepsisters soon too. The year ended with Londyn getting involved in some cyber-drama with a boy she had a crush on.

But it’s now January, and I’m looking forward to my friends and I starting a new semester of sixth grade. I was now a part of our school’s girls basketball team, and my mom had just purchased a new vehicle, a Chevy Tahoe. God was already blessing us this year, and I had faith things would only get better.

The sound of knocking at our apartment door jolted me out of my thoughts. I ran to the door, taking a quick look through the peephole where I saw my friends standing on our porch with Ahmani’s mom, Miss Kari, who’d driven them over. I let them all inside, and my friends followed me to my bedroom to put their overnight bags down while Miss Kari went to the kitchen to talk to my mom.

I smell pizza. C’mon. Let’s go eat ’cause I’m starving, Cierra said.

We can’t eat until my surprise gets here, I said.

Ahmani’s hazel brown eyes widened. What surprise?

Now, if I told you, it wouldn’t be a surprise, would it? I said, trying to sound all mysterious.

Is it a puppy? Cierra asked.

    "Dang, y’all
