The Christmas Wish - Sherron Elise
Chapter One
I shot up in bed as I heard the sound of glass shattering and my mom yelling at my dad. Tears burned my eyelids, and I placed my hands over my ears, curling my body up into a ball on my bed. I was so tired of this!
My parents had been arguing for months, but after Thanksgiving, they seemed to be getting along, and I was relieved they may not be headed for divorce court after all. But tonight, things took a terrible turn.
My parents hosted their annual Christmas party and things went downhill when my father accused my mom of cheating with a pilot at the airline where she’s a flight attendant. The pilot was one of our guests, which made the party go from fun to uncomfortable. The pilot ended up leaving, but my mom and dad continued to argue, so the rest of the guests left too. I was so embarrassed because my best friends and their parents came to the party, and they saw all of the drama. But I know my friends weren’t too surprised because I’ve been telling them for months my parents weren’t getting along.
But my humiliation soon turned into anger. I really wished my parents would just grow up. I began to wonder if a divorce would be for the best because I was sick of them fighting all of the time.
Looking at my cell phone, I saw it was after midnight, but I still opened my Spellbusters app. I sent this boy named Kameron a message: Hey. Are u still up?
I met Kameron while playing Spellbusters online. Like me, he is a sixth grader, and he’s really good at spelling. Both of us are high scorers so we started to message each other and I found out that he lives in Houston too and attends Austin Middle School. But we’ve never talked on the phone or seen each other (except for the pics we used for our Spellbusters profile photo). Kameron looks like the actor Miles Brown who plays the character Jack Johnson on my favorite TV show, Blackish.
About five minutes later, I heard the ching alerting me I had a new message.
Kameron08: Yeah, I’m here. What’s up?
I filled Kameron in on everything that happened at the party. Kameron revealed his parents argued a lot too. This is why I found him so easy to talk to.
Kameron08: Are they still fighting?
This caused me to actually sit up and listen. The house had grown quiet, so I guess both of them had gone to sleep.
