    Chapter One

You can’t be serious? Jaime asked.

Taylor sat back in his leather executive chair and steepled his fingers.

If you want my money, then you must meet my terms.

Sweat beaded on Jaime’s forehead. He’d been turned down by countless investors and was getting desperate. If he didn’t get money for further development soon, his project was going to die. The technology he and his partner, Robin, created could physically and mentally change mammals, including humans. All the potential investors had rejected the project for the same reason. In the wrong hands, their technology could be used to turn humans into mindless slaves.

Over and over, Jaime had patiently explained that with the proper guardrails and oversight it would never happen. Then he listed the benefits to humankind. Gender affirmation without surgery. Cure alcoholism. Cure all diseases for that matter. But all the investors repeated their fear about mindless slaves before showing Jaime the door.

All investors except for Taylor Hudson. Well known for being a ruthless shark and recognizing emerging technologies before anyone else, he had toyed with Jaime and Robin for months. They had provided him with all the information he demanded, but still, he wouldn’t make a final commitment. When Taylor asked Jaime to meet him in his office, Jaime thought he was ready to do business. He was but not the way Jaime expected.

You seriously want Robin? Jaime asked.

Just for one night, Taylor said as he examined his manicured nails. Considering what you want from me, it’s a small price to pay.

Why are you asking me? Why haven’t you approached her yourself? You don’t seem to be the shy type.

    Taylor shrugged.

    I did ask her.

And she turned you down? Jaime asked.

Shocking but true. I thought she had more sense.

If she said no, then why are we even discussing it?

Deep down, Jaime knew what Taylor was going to ask, but wanted to believe that even the ruthless Taylor Hudson wouldn’t cross that line.

I want you to make her do it.

    Jaime paled.

What are you suggesting? He could barely get the words out.

    Taylor grinned maliciously.

If your machine can do what you claim it can do, then use it on Robin. Make her want to have sex with me. Then after I’ve had my night with her, you can stick her back in the machine and make her forget it ever happened.

    Jaime glowered at Taylor.

    Yeah. But I’d know.

Taylor stood and went to the picture windows that overlooked the city. The sun was beginning to set. Sunlight bathed the buildings in a golden light.

You’re trying my patience, Jaime. I’m offering your precious project a lifeline and you’re acting like I’m not good enough for you.

    Jaime rubbed his forehead.

You’re asking me to do the very thing other investors hated about the machine. Turning a person into a mindless slave. Now I see why Robin and I should have never developed that feature.

That feature as you call it, Taylor said, is the very reason why I’m interested in buying it. Taking away a person’s free will? You’re too naïve to see what a powerful tool it can be.

Please don’t make me do this.

Taylor went back to his desk.

You have until tomorrow to deliver Robin to me either of her own free will or under the power of your machine.

And if I don’t? Jaime asked.

Then you’ll have to find another investor.

Jaime left Taylor’s office in a daze. He knew there was never going to be another investor. He either had to make a deal with the devil or he and Robin would have to kiss all their hard work goodbye.

    You okay, Jaime?

Jaime had been so lost in his thoughts he didn’t realize he was standing next to Taylor’s secretary’s desk.

I’m fine, Leslie, Jaime said. Thank you for asking.

    Leslie grinned.

    "Nobody
